Outstanding Activist!

Betsy Thomson has been an animal lover for as long as she can remember. Blessed with a deep sense of empathy for all creatures in need, she has personally rescued countless cats and dogs (and other animals too) over the years. She has also donated her time and energy to help homeless animals in New York City by volunteering at several different shelters in the area and by walking dogs in need of exercise and companionship. At one particular cat shelter in the city, Betsy has been a regular volunteer for more than twelve years.

For many years, Betsy was an “on-again, off-again” vegetarian. Then she attended an animal rights conference. At the event, one of the speakers said, “If you really love animals, you’ve got to stop eating them.” When Betsy heard this, she felt as though the speaker was addressing himself directly to her. His words struck home, and she knew she had to become vegan. Ever since that day, Betsy has committed herself to spreading the word about veganism. She encourages kindness for all animals by wearing message buttons and pins and by keeping educational literature close at hand. She also informs friends, family and others in her community about animal issues by buying films like “The Witness” and “Peaceable Kingdom” in bulk and giving them away as gifts. In all that she does, Betsy hopes to serve as an example of someone who embraces and encourages compassion for all beings.

As Betsy’s interest in animal activism has grown, so has her level of commitment. Over the past few years, she has participated in numerous demonstrations to protest the fur industry, the use of animals in the circus and other forms of animal cruelty. She has also become very involved in humane education and believes strongly that teaching our young people the importance of compassion for all life is one sure way to change the world. Alongside Farm Sanctuary Humane Educator, Carol Moon, Betsy has participated in school presentations and staffed humane education outreach tables throughout New York City. By reaching out to students and teachers with her message of compassion, Betsy is helping to create a brighter future for all of us. Thank you, Betsy!
