Outstanding Activist!

From a very early age, Bryce Katzman felt a special closeness with animals. He cared deeply for his family's companion animals, and although he was told throughout childhood that they could be treated differently because they were "just dogs" and "not people," Bryce never surrendered his belief that all animals deserve love, respect and protection from harm. The book, "Charlotte's Web" and films like "Watership Down" and "The Animal Film" helped bolster this belief. Because, as a child, Bryce felt helpless himself at times, he was able to identify with the innocence and fragility of animal life. Thankfully, he carried this powerful sense of empathy with him into adulthood, where it has helped him help animals who are suffering.

In 2000, after learning about the cruelty of factory farming, Bryce became vegan and began actively advocating on behalf of animals. Over the years, he has done his best to give a voice to animals in need by participating in organizational letter-writing campaigns and by becoming a member of a vegan meet-up group in Chico, California. He has also dedicated his time and energy to spaying and neutering feral cats in his hometown in Northern California, and he even did a three-day stint in a lion costume to protest Circus Gatti's cruelty to animals. Most importantly, as an elementary educator, he does his best to share his love and compassion for animals with our future generations.

As a volunteer for Farm Sanctuary, Bryce has proven invaluable. Always one of the first to show up for our shelter events ready to help, his talents and welcoming personality have contributed to the success of several sanctuary affairs including our annual Country Hoe Down, our Fourth of July Pignic, and our Thanksgiving Celebration for the Turkeys. Bryce has participated in the planning and execution of these events by recruiting volunteers, picking up much-needed supplies at the store, grilling veggie dogs, and serving as an audio-visual technician. Everyone who has seen Bryce in action at one of these events knows how lucky we are to have him around.

In addition to helping out at Farm Sanctuary events, Bryce has also contributed to our education and outreach efforts, and has helped out with farm chores at our California Shelter. On busy Saturdays when we have had large groups visiting the farm, Bryce has cheerfully volunteered to help with tours. He has also helped make life a little easier for our volunteer interns by taking them shopping, helping them clean up the intern house, and fixing their TV when it acts up. But that's not all! Bryce has also gone tabling for Farm Sanctuary and he has helped feed and provide health treatments for our resident cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and rabbits.

Thank you, Bryce, for all that you do on behalf of suffering farm animals! Your compassion and commitment are an inspiration for many!
