Outstanding Activist!

Colleen Patrick-Goudreau started helping animals when she was twenty years old after reading John Robbin's Diet For A New America and going vegetarian. Fast forward several years and Colleen picked up a copy of Slaughterhouse by Gail Eisnitz, which instantly gave her the initiative to go vegan, realizing that all animals...cows raised for dairy and hens raised for egg production...are ultimately all slaughtered.

Three years ago, Colleen founded the Oakland, CA chapter of Unitarian Universalists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The chapter has been very successful, the most effective project being the monthly vegan cooking classes which attract people from all over the Bay area. Colleen has personally seen dozens of people become vegetarian and vegan through the information and skills learned in these classes, and finds it the most effective form of her activism. She is currently pursuing funding possibilities to produce and film a vegan cooking series.

Colleen has also been active in involving children and young adults in the fight for farm animal rights. She mentors teenagers on becoming activists and vegetarians, and exposes them to an effective form of outreach she calls "Street TV" where literature is distributed and a video depicting the cruelty of the factory farming industry plays on a portable TV.

Colleen also spends a lot of time on educating classroom children through Humane Education. She was recently accepted to the International Institute of Humane Education and looks forward to starting this program.

Thank you, Colleen, for dedicating so many hours to raising awareness about farm animal issues, and promoting a vegan and vegetarian lifestyle!
