Outstanding Activist!

Denise Hewitt became a vegetarian in 1991 after reading John Robbin's book, Diet For a New America. Soon after, Denise received her Masters in Clinical Nutrition from Columbia University and began working for a local rehabilitation hospital. After recognizing that the foods offered to patients were not helping them achieve good health, she became disillusioned. After taking some time away from her job and attending a conference on sustainable agriculture, Denise found the path that would join both her nutrition expertise and her goal to end farm animal suffering.

It became obvious to her that most dieticians were uninformed about food production and its negative impacts on the health of people and the environment. She joined a group of like-minded dieticians and started working on a position paper for the American Dietetic Association. The main focus was the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture. The paper, which includes a section on downed animals, was not accepted, but she hopes to submit it again next year.

Denise has always felt that farm animals are the most mistreated and invisible members of the animal community. Last year, Denise volunteered on the farm at our New York Shelter. That experience solidified her commitment to improve the welfare of farm animals. She has also helped by writing numerous letters to legislators in response to Farm Sanctuary action alerts, and even testified at a hearing on the New Jersey Department of Agriculture's unsatisfactory draft of "humane" standards for farm animals.

Thank you, Denise, for your commitment to farm animals through your career choices and your dedication to changing the legal status of farm animals through legislative efforts.

Together, we ARE making a difference. If you would like to find out more about volunteering your time to educate others about factory farming and vegetarianism, please contact us at activist@farmsanctuary.org, or call 607-583-2225 ext. 229. Click here to find out what YOU can do to help!
