Outstanding Activist!

After stumbling on Farm Sanctuary' websites, Donna Calvao saw for the first time what really happens on factory farms. Seeing the pictures of tortured animals confined in crates and cages, she decided to kick the meat habit. Later, she gained inspiration by attending a humane education workshop, and the next day, saw Farm Sanctuary Founders Gene and Lorri Bauston speak at the San Diego Meat-Out.

Soon after her introduction into farmed animal rights, Donna put her motivation into action. She flew across the country to join the effort to ban gestation crates in the state of Florida. Donna pounded the pavement collecting signatures to ban cruel gestation crates for the first time in any U.S. state.

"Having my eyes opened to animal suffering was very upsetting, but feeling powerless in the face of such injustice was even worse. My trip to Florida was my first opportunity to put my sadness into positive action and words could not describe how fulfilling an experience that was for me!"

Donna was thrilled to announce the Florida victory on air at a San Diego radio station when promoting her then upcoming Farm Sanctuary fundraiser. Donna organized a viewing of Charlotte's Web in a local theatre to raise funds for rescued farm animals and promote a cruelty-free lifestyle. Not only was Donna excited to see this compassionate classic on the big screen, she raised awareness for many San Diego residents - young and old - about the abuses suffered by "food-production" animals by distributing literature and providing educational goody bags.

Donna has also launched a highly successful local No Veal Campaign, getting dozens of San Diego restaurants to sign pledges not to serve cruel veal in their establishments. Her success is a testament to her special ability to approach others and raise awareness in a positive way and inspire change. Her work is providing a model of activism and directly affecting change for farm animals.

Thank you, Donna, for your continuing hard work and dedication to reaching out to the public and raising awareness about the abuses of factory farming, and your amazing accomplishments with Farm Sanctuary's No Veal Campaign.
