Outstanding Activist!

Nora Kramer's efforts to help farm animals started in 2001, when she began a volunteer internship at Farm Sanctuary's New York Shelter. She planned to volunteer for two months, but she ended up staying more than twice that long, and the experience changed her life. During her 4 ½ months at Farm Sanctuary, Nora cleaned and cobwebbed barns, helped care for the animals, and volunteered in the campaign office. This period of time spent giving selflessly to help animals so impacted Nora that she wrote a letter about her internship to Newsweek magazine -and got it published! She also wrote an article for Farm Sanctuary's newsletter, generously sharing all that she learned from her volunteer experience with our many supporters.

After her internship at Farm Sanctuary, Nora went on to volunteer at PeTA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for two months. She also worked at San Francisco based IDA (In Defense of Animals) for two years. Currently, she is working for a group called CHOICE (Citizens for Healthy Options in Children's Education), which advocates for healthier, plant-based foods in schools. She also runs a humane education program in San Francisco called The Empathy Project, where she offers free classroom presentations about animal and environmental issues. In addition to these two school programs, she also started and runs www.vegSF.com, a website that lists veg-friendly restaurants, grocery stores, and other resources for vegetarians in the Bay Area, and created and moderates the Bay Area Animal Rights Network, an email list which helps local activists connect with one another.

A valuable member of our Friends of Hilda Club, Nora has contributed her time, talents and financial resources to Farm Sanctuary. But ours is certainly not the only organization to have benefited from her generosity and commitment. Over the years, Nora has used her many talents to write and edit articles for Veg News magazine, coordinate community workshops on leafleting, letter-writing, and communication through the Bay Area Vegetarians group, and facilitate presentations about vegetarianism and animal rights for Bay Area social justice youth programs such as People's Grocery, Art in Action, Next Generation, and Earth Team. Working hand in hand with local animal rights groups, she has coordinated dozens of activist events including KFC protests, soy ice-cream giveaways outside of Ben & Jerry's, and leafleting events at colleges, restaurants, bookstores, and city street corners. On her own, Nora has had letters to the editor about animal issues printed in many major U.S. newspapers including the New York Times, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Sun Times, and others.

Thank you, Nora, for all that you do! You are a true blessing to the animals and an inspiration to us all.
