Outstanding Activist!

Tammie Sandon, of Temecula, CA knows about opening her heart and home to farm animals in need. Tammie, a member of our Emergency Response team, has volunteered with Farm Sanctuary to help with emergency rescues, and provide a temporary "safehouse" for abused and neglected farmed animals at their 10-acre home in southern California.

In 2002, Tammie was instrumental in the success of The Great American Turkey Rescue, where 96 turkeys were rescued from an automobile salvage yard in California. The turkeys were part of a promotional event for the salvage yard company which was allowing the birds to be purchased for 25 cents if chased and caught by customers. Tammie helped load the birds onto our transport truck, and conducted media interviews to educate the public about the turkey cruelty case, and why she was choosing to save turkeys, rather than eat a turkey, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Her active participation helped save dozens of turkeys from slaughter, and encouraged people to have a compassionate, vegetarian holiday season.

Most recently, Tammie fostered ten goats from a cruelty case in San Diego county, where a man was purchasing sick and debilitated animals only to be resold again to be used for food. While providing emergency care for the animals, Tammie fell in love with a goat who was blind from a severe, untreated eye infection. She is now providing lifelong care for this 'special needs' goat. Without temporary "safehouses" and dedicated activists like Tammie who provide emergency care, many suffering animals would be sent to slaughter, instead of sanctuary. Thank you, Tammie, for your commitment to caring for abused farm animals, and for making your home a refuge for victims of the "food animal" industries.
