Chicago Update: Lawsuit Rejected;
Repeal Ordinance Introduced
On Tuesday, June 12, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Illinois Restaurant Association (IRA) to overturn Chicago's foie gras ban. U.S. District Judge Blanche Manning summed up her 26-page ruling by stating, "Chicago's ban of foie gras sales in restaurants does not exceed the City's home rule powers or violate the dormant Commerce Clause. Thus, the Ordinance does not violate the Illinois or United States Constitutions."
This is a great victory, but our attention must now shift to members of Chicago’s City Council, who are being bombarded by the restaurant industry and agribusiness, urging them to overturn Chicago's historic foie gras ban.
On Wednesday, June 13, Alderman Thomas Tunney and Alderman Bernard Stone each introduced an ordinance to repeal Chicago's humane law banning the sale of foie gras. This is a slap in the face to compassionate consumers everywhere and to the people of Chicago, nearly 80 percent of whom, when polled, favor a ban on foie gras production for the simple reason that it symbolizes the ultimate in gratuitous, egregious cruelty.

Whether or not you are a Chicago resident, it is important for Aldermen Tunney and Stone to know that citizens support Chicago's foie gras ban. Urge them to reconsider their position and to leave Chicago's humane law in place!
