After at least four years of cruelty reports by neighbors that went unanswered, Farm Sanctuary was recently alerted to a horrendous case of cruelty at a free range meat farm in Canaan, New York. And, following a month-long struggle with local authorities, we were able to confiscate 27 starved and dehydrated animals — including one pig, as well as 14 sheep who are pregnant and about to give birth.

The sheep arrived at Farm Sanctuary filthy and parasite-infested and were so malnourished that, without intervention, they would not have been able to produce milk for their babies, who will be born soon. The animals’ former living conditions were also nightmarish, causing injury to several sheep who had festering wounds that were left untreated. Other sheep were forced to endure painful hoof problems, which made it difficult for them to walk. Farm Sanctuary healthcare staff have been working daily to stabilize the sheep; some of the animals, however, are still fighting to regain their health.

The pregnant mothers were so emaciated upon arrival at Farm Sanctuary that their babies’ lives may still be in peril. We need your help now to provide these severely-neglected mothers with the special care they, and their babies, need to survive.
