2014 Hoe Down Speakers

Larry Baldwin’s current role as North Carolina CAFO Coordinator with Waterkeeper Alliance (WKA) involves assisting and guiding Riverkeeper Programs in North Carolina in their efforts to fight the Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) industry. Larry has become a voice locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally to speak out against the practices of the CAFO industry. His work includes aerial and ground monitoring of CAFOs, along with sampling and compiling photo and video documentation of individual facilities. Larry is honored to stand with environmental justice organizations, scientists, other Riverkeepers, the Waterkeeper Alliance, and citizens of this state and country to participate in the frontline efforts required to reign in an industry that is out of control.

Gene Baur
, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. Since the mid-1980s, Gene has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our system of cheap food production. His book, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food, a national best seller, is a thought-provoking investigation of the ethical questions surrounding beef, poultry, pork, milk, and egg production. It describes what each of us can do to promote compassion and help stop the systematic mistreatment of the billions of farm animals who are exploited for food in the United States every year.

 

Susie Coston
Susie Coston
, Farm Sanctuary’s national shelter director, joined us in March 2000, following six years working for a veterinarian and at a sanctuary in West Virginia. Prior to that, she earned a master’s degree in special education and worked with humans with disabilities. As a farm animal caregiver for more than a decade, Susie has been a mentor to many of her peers, including some who have started their own sanctuaries throughout the United States, and is known for bringing animals’ stories of love, loss, and life to the public. Susie also ensures that the nearly 1,000 rescued animals sheltered at Farm Sanctuary each year receive the best possible care at every stage of their lives.

Leah Garcés
is the USA Director for Compassion in World Farming, an international organization that campaigns to end all cruel factory farming practices. Leah has authored and edited a number of reports, articles, and books on animals in agriculture. With a strong focus on broiler chickens, she provides strategic and technical advice to food businesses in order to advance policies and practices that result in measureable improvements for farm animals. A proponent of collaboration, Leah launched the multi-stakeholder Georgians for Pastured Poultry. Leah is a mother of two residing in Decatur, Georgia. She has also worked to increase fresh food options in schools, successfully establishing “Vegetarian Tuesdays” in the City Schools of Decatur.

Erica Meier
is the executive director of Compassion Over Killing (COK), a nonprofit animal protection organization based in Washington, D.C. Since 1995, COK has worked to expose farm animal abuse and promote vegetarian eating using a variety of strategies, including undercover investigations, litigation, corporate campaigns, and public outreach. In addition to ending the egg industry’s misleading “Animal Care Certified” claim, COK persuaded BOCA Foods to stop using eggs and airs pro-vegetarian commercials nationwide. Before working at COK, Erica was an animal control officer in D.C., rescuing sick, injured, and homeless animals as well as enforcing animal protection laws.

Victoria Moran
is a vegan of thirty years, the author of eleven books, and director of Main Street Vegan Academy, an in-person program in New York City that trains and certifies Vegan Lifestyle Coaches and Educators. Her latest book is Main Street Vegan, which VegNews magazine calls “The Vegan Bible, New Testament,” and which has fans including Michael Moore, Russell Simmons, and Bill Clinton. Victoria hosts the weekly Main Street Vegan podcast and is working with her husband, William Melton, and Farm Sanctuary’s Gene Baur as a co-executive producer of Miss Liberty, an in-development family film about a cow who escapes from a slaughterhouse.

, owner of Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats in Washington D.C. and two-time winner of the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, is determined to unlock the secrets of creating animal-free food for everyone to enjoy. Doron holds a degree in dietetics from the University of Maryland and strives to bring memories of her favorite treats to vegan reality. She has been featured on The Cooking Channel’s Not My Mama’s Meals with Bobby Deen, as well as NBC’s Today show with Kathy Lee and Hoda. Doron enjoyed a guest spot on
Martha Stewart Living Radio, and her articles and recipes have appeared with Vegetarian Times and Reader’s Digest. Her first book, Sticky Fingers’ Sweets: 100 Super-Secret Vegan Recipes, was released in February of 2012 and has since been listed as a best seller by The Denver Post. Residing in D.C. with her husband and son, Doron feverishly works to balance her love of food, family, companion animals, competitive cycling, and wine.

, vegan chef, cookbook author, and television cooking show host, has been promoting delicious, decadent, and healthful plant-based foods for the past thirty years. Her recent bestselling cookbook, Artisan Vegan Cheese, has been touted as “the holy grail of vegan cuisine” by Neal Barnard of PCRM, and was voted one of top 5 vegan cookbooks of 2012 by LA Weekly, and top 10 by VegNews. She is co-host of Vegan Mashup, a national cooking show on the Create Channel, and stars in her own whimsical online show, Miyoko’s Kitchen. As a speaker, she presents regularly at major festivals and events around the country, and teaches in the McDougall Program.

Paul Shapiro
is the vice president of farm animal protection at The Humane Society of the United States, where he’s served for the last nine years waging legislative and corporate campaigns to give animals raised for food a voice. Before that, he was the founder and campaigns director of Compassion Over Killing, a farm animal welfare and vegetarian advocacy organization. Paul has been interviewed in hundreds of print, broadcast, and online news sources as an authority on farm animal welfare and animal advocacy. He has also published dozens of articles about animal welfare in publications ranging from daily newspapers to academic journals.

Kerrie Wooten, Farm Sanctuary’s animal care manager ensures that the hundreds of animals living at our Northern California Shelter receive the best possible care. After first coming to Farm Sanctuary as an intern in the summer of 2004, Kerrie continued as a regular volunteer until becoming permanent staff in 2006. Kerrie graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. A lifelong animal lover, Kerrie has spent time volunteering at the Wildlife Care Association in Sacramento, California, and at the International Bird Rescue in Cordelia, California. When she isn’t caring for the rescued animals at Farm Sanctuary, Kerrie enjoys spending time with her beloved companion animals, photography, reading, and exploring the vegan offerings of restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dawn Garcia
Dawn Garcia works professionally as a wildlife biologist and is an active conservationist with the Altacal Audubon Society. She has been working with birds since 1993 and has initiated studies on songbirds and various owl species. Birding, hiking, being in nature, and traveling are some of Dawn’s passions.

Jo Anna Arroyo
Since 2005, Jo Anna Arroyo has worked for the US Forest Service as a wildlife biologist. Her duties include advocating for wildlife populations and addressing ecosystem concerns. Jo Anna participates in forest planning projects that focus on protecting and conserving habitats for wildlife species such as the California spotted owl. She enjoys watercolor painting, wildlife viewing, and hiking.

Yoga

Sherry Morgado has been a yoga practitioner for eight years. She owns Sanctuary Nutrition and Wellness and works as a nutrition consultant and Ayurvedic health educator. Drawing from Ayurvedic principles of bio-individuality, Sherry helps people transition to a whole-food, plant-based diet and assists those who are already vegan or vegetarian wishing to fine-tune their diet. Formerly, she taught yoga at Blue Lotus Yoga in Chico, California. Sherry has been vegan for the last six years and credits her yoga practice with opening her eyes to the joys of a cruelty-free diet.
