Activities

Visiting with the Animals

Have you ever kissed a cow, or rubbed a pig’s belly? At Farm Sanctuary’s California Country Hoe Down, you’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with lots of friendly farm animals.

Tour parts of our tranquil, 300-acre sanctuary and meet cows, pigs, goats, sheep, turkeys, and other farm animals who have survived the animal agriculture industry against all odds. Whether they were rescued from factory farms or en route to slaughterhouses, these animals will inspire you with their touching stories and incredible personalities.

Saturday tours are self-guided, but come back on Sunday for an informational 50-minute guided tour with a Farm Sanctuary staff member. These tours depart from the People Barn on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cooking Demonstrations

Develop your culinary smarts by participating in a fun and informative cooking demonstration with the very talented vegan chef, Jason Wyrick. Creator of the online publication, the Vegan Culinary Experience, Jason will be showing attendees how to master the grill “a la vegan” on Saturday, just in time for summer BBQs. On Sunday morning, join him for an enticing take on breakfast foods. Take your newfound knowledge back home and show others how wonderful vegan cuisine can be!

Hayrides

Enjoy a relaxing hayride across the wide-open fields of our sanctuary. Hayrides arrive and depart frequently from the People Barn and the main barnyard during shelter time on Saturday.

Afterwards, wander around the open People Barn pavilion and take in breathtaking views of the jagged buttes that overlook nearby Black Butte Lake.

Speaker Presentations

Country Hoe Down guest speakers will move and motivate attendees with presentations on current farm animal issues, campaigns and advocacy efforts, as well as workshops on health, the environment, social justice, and more! See who’s in the current line-up and get ready to optimize the effectiveness of your animal advocacy.

Silent Auction

Bid on beautiful jewelry, stunning farm animal photography, high-quality art, and other items to help raise critical funds for our vital rescue, education and advocacy efforts. Interested in donating an item to the auction? Please contact Carolyn at cmullin@farmsanctuary.org.

Vegan Feast

Saturday’s dinner is a vegan feast, prepared by caterers who specialize in cruelty-free foods. Enjoy vegan versions of “down home” country favorites like piping-hot cornbread, savory potato salad, finger-licking-good BBQ seitan sandwiches and Field Roast cutlets, fresh local salads, and much, much more! Soy- and gluten-free options will be offered. And don’t forget about the decadent desserts prepared by our favorite local bakery, Orland’s Alta Maria.

Kid Fun

Enjoying a special program of their very own, kids will have a blast with face painting, music time, arts and crafts, and farm animal-themed activities. Most activities are facilitated by volunteers, but a kid’s activity table will be open throughout the weekend for children and their families to use at their leisure.

Barn Dance

Boogie the night away at the barn dance. High-spirited music will be played by local favorite, the Pub Scouts, a country/contra band that can energize even the coyest of listeners to try their hand (and feet!) at square dancing. A DJ will offer square dancers a break by spinning contemporary tunes on the turntable. Sip complimentary beverages (with or without alcohol) from Frey Vineyards and Sierra Nevada, snack on vegan munchies from Lundberg Family Farms and Edward & Sons, melt over the Maggie Mudd dairy-free ice cream sundae bar, and party ‘til the cows come home!

Nature Activities

Take advantage of northern California’s natural beauty and the solitude of the sanctuary. Spend an hour hiking around Black Butte Lake (located just across the street!) or on the Buckhorn, Grizzly Flat or Orland Butte trails. In the evening, soak up the stars with a bit of stargazing. The skies are much bigger and brighter out here in the country! After a tour on Sunday, cool off with a refreshing dip in the lake before heading home.

Sunday Morning: Yoga, Breakfast, Cooking Demo & Guided Tours

Wake up to crowing roosters and braying donkeys on Sunday morning and start the day with an energizing session of yoga in the People Barn. Please bring your own mat.

Following yoga, have your fill of the vegan continental breakfast spread (thanks to WholeSoy & Co., Tofutti and Alvarado Street Bakery) located in the People Barn pavilion. Hot coffee, tea and simple breakfast items will be provided free of charge. Have a seat and watch vegan chef Jason Wyrick take on breakfast like no one else. Become inspired by all the beloved breakfast fare favorites that can be made without animal products! Round out your visit to Farm Sanctuary with an in-depth tour of the shelter. An Education staff member will introduce you to all our special animal residents and answer any questions you may have. Stop by the gift shop on your way out for last-minute souvenirs of your trip for you and your friends and family back home.
