Letters to Legislators

Sample Letter: No Downers Legislation
Sample Letter: Anti-Veal Legislation
Sample Letter: Ban Foie Gras Legislation

Sample Letter: No Downers Legislation

Dear Senator/Representative,
I am writing to let you know of my concern for downed animals, animals that are too sick or injured even to stand.

Downed animals pose an increased risk to human health, as they are more likely to be infected with bacterial pathogens and suffer neurological diseases. Additionally, downed animals are frequently dragged to slaughter, or abandoned to die slowly from neglect at stockyards across the country.

I urge you to co-sponsor (Bill number), and to do everything possible to see that stockyards stop accepting and selling downed animals.

Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter: Anti-Veal Legislation

Dear Assemblymember,
I am writing to urge you to support (bill number), which would ban cruel veal crates.

I am strongly opposed to the cruel treatment of veal calves, which involves taking young calves away from their mothers and chained by their neck in tiny crates. They spend their entire lives unable to walk, turn around, or lie down comfortably. Additionally, the calves are denied adequate iron and fiber in order to produce the pale-colored meat sold as white veal. The veal bill will prohibit this intolerable cruelty by requiring that calves raised for veal have at least enough space to turn around and a diet that does not cause anemia.

Please do everything you can to ensure passage of (bill number).

Sincerely,

Sample Letter: Ban Foie Gras Legislation

Dear Representative:
I am writing to encourage you to support (bill number), which would prohibit the force-feeding of birds to produce foie gras.
To produce foie gras, birds are force-fed enormous quantities of food numerous times a day when a metal pipe is thrust down their throats. The birds suffer terribly from extreme obesity, lacerations of the throat, and impaction of undigested food. This process is so cruel that it has been outlawed in many European nations, and it should be banned in the United States as well.

I strongly urge you to support (bill number). Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration.

Sincerely,
