Thousands of Supporters Gathered on July 27: to Make the 100 House Parties-100 Days Out from the Election a Tremendous Success!
This November, California voters will have the opportunity to vote YES on a ballot measure that will improve the lives of 20 million farm animals. Proposition 2 would phase out some of the worst abuses in industrial factory farming, and ensure that three species of farm animals would be afforded the most basic of needs: the ability to stretch their limbs, lie down comfortably and turn around.
Battery cages
Egg-laying hens are typically crowded together into tiny cages, where each bird is given an area smaller than an 8 ½-by-11-inch sheet of paper on which to live and is prevented from walking or stretching her wings. (insert image of battery cages)
Gestation crates
The majority of sows bred to provide piglets to the pork industry spend most of their lives inside gestation crates, 2-foot-wide metal enclosures that severely restrict the animals' movement and thwart their natural behaviors. (insert image of gestation crates)
Veal crates
Crated veal calves are normally confined inside 2-foot-wide enclosures for their entire lives. Usually chained by their necks, these animals cannot even turn around, stretch their limbs, or lie down comfortably. (insert image of veal crates)
Prop 2 is a modest proposal, simply asking that these animals deserve the most basic considerations, yet it prompts a dramatic shift in the public’s recognition that these animals are sentient, deserving of protection and should not be treated as mere commodities.
Happenings on the campaign trail:
On Friday August 8, seasoned and budding activists from all over southern California, dutifully made the journey to San Luis Obispo to attend and speak at a hearing in support of Prop 2. Supporters gave testimony on the importance of ending the cruelty of battery cages, veal crates and gestation crates. And while the opposition tried heartily to make the debate a financial matter, it is undeniably an issue of compassion and basic welfare.
Big agribusiness is fighting this reasonable proposition by raising big money across the nation. On Sunday, July 27, activists gathered from around the country to rally in support of Proposition 2, and to raise funds for this monumental campaign. More than 100 parties were held, from California to New Jersey, and the support was phenomenal. To add to the camaraderie, a nationwide conference call connected each party, so everyone could listen in as Farm Sanctuary president and co-founder Gene Baur, actor/get_involved/activist James Cromwell (star of the movie, “Babe”) and representatives from The HSUS spoke on behalf of the animals who so desperately need the relief that Proposition 2’s passage will bring.
The parties were wildly successful, with many groups far exceeding their donation goals. But our work is not done! With your help, Californians for Humane Farms will be able to educate voters, through television and radio advertisements about the importance of voting YES on Prop 2. But your help is still needed! The opposition is determined and well-funded, and they aim to confuse and discourage the voters who want to protect animals.
Please help us stop some of the most intensively cruel factory farm practices across California by doing anything you can to raise funds and awareness for this historic effort! There are many ways to help:
- Get the junk out! Hold a yard sale with your friends. If that Dollywood picture frame has never seen the light of day, give it up for the animals.
- Clean it up! Hold a car wash. They’re cheap, fun and can pull in great funds.
- Have the best birthday yet. Ask friends to donate to the campaign, as your birthday present. You’ll never forget the year you helped the animals.
- Oversee a Prop 2 table at your local craft fair or farmer’s market. You can request materials at www.yesonprop2.com
- Give a talk at your place of worship, classroom or other community gathering. You can earn funds and educate voters at the same time!
- Support the campaign by sporting Yes on Prop 2 merchandise! Get your new threads here: http://www.cafepress.com/humaneca
There are endless ways to help animals. But the most important thing is to get involved in this historic campaign. There are only a few months left, so get moving!
