Farm Sanctuary Breaks Silence on Amazon.com's Foie Gras Sales
Investigative Video Reveals Horrifying, Illegal Abuse at Quebec's Largest Foie Gras Facility
Watkins Glen, NY - July 17, 2007 - Farm Sanctuary and Global Action Network have released powerful new photographs and video footage taken by an undercover investigator. This footage can be seen above or on Youtube.com. The stark images reveal multiple animal cruelty violations committed at Elevages Perigord in Quebec, Canada's largest foie gras production facility. The photo and video evidence has been submitted to Canadian authorities who are looking into prosecution.
The production of foie gras is inherently cruel. Birds are de-beaked, de-toed, housed in filthy, poorly-maintained cages, and forced to ingest liquid feed pressure-pumped 12 inches down their throats through a metal pipe several times a day in order to induce severely diseased livers.
The practices at Elevages Perigord shown in our footage depict harsh abuses that violate Canadian animal welfare laws and go well beyond even the standard cruelty common in foie gras production.
In the United States, Amazon.com hawks foie gras produced at Elevages Perigord. Farm Sanctuary is asking the public to contact Amazon at: 206-266-1000 (press 1 for customer service, 5 for corporate receptionist and ask for customer service). If you have an account with Amazon.com, go to www.amazon.com/help, log in and click on customer service to send an email registering your concerns and asking the company to cease sales of foie gras.
