Ten Motherless Lambs Find Loving Refuge in New York

Farm Animal Rescue Groups to Shelter Lambs from Ulster County Cruelty Case

Watkins Glen, NY and Woodstock, NY - November 8, 2007 - Today, ten fragile lambs-no more than two weeks old-are being transported by Farm Sanctuary, the nation's leading farm animal rescue and protection group, from the Ulster County SPCA to farm animal rescue and rehabilitation facilities in Woodstock and Watkins Glen, N.Y. Seized as the result of a recent cruelty case, the lambs are reported by the SPCA to be in stable condition, but in desperate need of specialized, 'round-the-clock care.

The only survivors out of 14 suckling lambs allegedly acquired by a man, who purchased them as gifts for his daughter and then abandoned them without arranging for their care, these ten lambs will be cared for by Farm Sanctuary and Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary caregivers until they grow healthy enough to be placed in safe, loving adoptive homes. Farm Sanctuary, which operates the largest farm animal rescue and adoption network in the country, will not only find permanent refuge for all the lambs, but will also shelter seven of them at their Watkins Glen sanctuary. Three of the lambs will reside in foster care at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.

"Woodstock Sanctuary is happy to receive these little lambs and give them the love and care they deserve," said Jenny Brown, co-founder and director of Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. "It's unfortunate that four of them didn't make it and we hope that the person who abandoned these babies will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

At Farm Sanctuary and Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, the little lambs will find no shortage of nourishing food, warm straw to rest in, top-of-the-line veterinary care and most all-compassion and tenderness from humans who want the very best for them.

"These helpless little lambs are still nursing and therefore rely on the kindness and mercy of humans to survive," said Susie Coston, Farm Sanctuary's national shelter director, who is urgently readying comfortable hospital pens, taking inventory of baby bottles, and prepping her staff for the arrival of the lambs. "We are just very thankful we can provide them with the intensive care they need and give them a second chance at life."

As they grow and thrive, Farm Sanctuary will be seeking lifelong refuge for the lambs and placing them in compassionate homes where they will live out the rest of their lives in peace. Potential guardians who are interested in applying for Farm Sanctuary's Farm Animal Adoption Network are encouraged to visit www.farmsanctuary.org or call 607-583-2225 for more information.
