Zogby Poll: Eight in Ten New Yorkers Oppose Cruel Methods Used to Produce Veal

Anti-Veal Campaign Heats Up in New York

New York, NY- May 15, 2001 - A Zogby Poll of 908 adults conducted this week across New York state found that eight in ten oppose methods commonly used in the production of veal - 79% say it is unacceptable to tether or confine calves in narrow crates such that they cannot walk or turn around while 15% say this is acceptable, and 79% say it is unacceptable to deny calves adequate iron in order to induce an anemic condition which produces the pale colored meat sold as veal while 14% say this is acceptable.

The poll was commissioned by Farm Sanctuary, a farm animal protection organization based in Watkins Glen, NY. The organization has opposed veal production methods and worked to educate people about veal and other inhumane farming practices since its inception in 1986. Commenting on the poll results, the organization's campaign director, Gene Baur (formerly Bauston), stated, "Time and time again, we find that U.S. consumers are appalled to learn about cruel practices associated with veal production. Americans oppose confining calves in crates and deliberately making them anemic, and it is time for the cruelty of veal production to be outlawed in the U.S. as it has been outlawed in Europe."

Nearly 30 of New York City's top restaurants, including Tavern on the Green, Lutece, The Four Seasons, Asia de Cuba, Verbena, La Grenouille, Park Avenue Café, and the Russian Tea Room have signed Farm Sanctuary's pledge not to serve veal from calves raised in crates and fed a diet which causes anemia. In addition, a majority of the restaurants in Farm Sanctuary's hometown of Watkins Glen, NY have also pledged not to serve crated, anemic veal.

On Sunday, May 20th, Farm Sanctuary is hosting a star-studded Gala at The Plaza Hotel at Central Park in New York City to raise awareness and funding for a "Say No to Veal" advertizing campaign in New York City. Among those who will be attending are: Mary Tyler Moore, Chevy Chase, Stefanie Powers, Ally Sheedy, and Kevin Nealon. In addition, U.S. Congressman Gary Ackerman will be receiving an award for his commitment to farm animal protection legislation in the U.S. Congress.
