Petaluma: A 23-year-old Shetland pony mare needs a loving home. Betty is retired after years as a children’s riding pony and deserves a peaceful life in the company of another horse, pony or mini pony. Her caregiver must move cross-country at the end of July and does not wish to put Betty through such a long journey and the continued loneliness of life without a companion. If you can provide a safe, happy home for Betty, please contact Marilyn.

Archer: Three rescued horses need your help. Their caregiver has been rescuing, sheltering and advocating for horses, greyhounds, and other animals for more than20 years. Now she is experiencing financial difficulties due to the expense of caring for special needs animals, has been forced to sell her farm, and will soon undergo back surgery. She desperately needs a home for her beloved horses. These sweet animals are elderly, 20 or 21 years old, and have some health problems, but they could have years of happy life ahead of them. If you can foster or adopt any or all of them, please contact Mary.

They are the granddaughters of champion horse Smart Zanolena. Sizzlin’ is a Strawberry Roan, and E’ster is a Paint/Quarter Horse. Bath: There are many Thoroughbred horses available for adoption at the Finger Lakes SPCA. The horses came from a cruelty case involving 80 Thoroughbreds who were rescued from severe starvation and neglect. The horses have received lots of handling and care since the rescue and are ready for permanent homes. They range in age, color and temperament. If you can provide one, or more, of these horses with the loving home they deserve, please contact Vicki at the Finger Lakes SPCA.

The vet has told them that the alternative is euthanasia. The horse is otherwise in excellent health. He is friendly, well-mannered, and comfortable with a halter. Monravia: Can you help a special horse? Montau is a registered quarter-horse mare in her forties. She has dental issues but does very well on grass. Her caregiver cannot provide her the pasture she needs, however, and is hoping to find an adopter who can. Montau would be an excellent companion animal. She is very well behaved, loves to be around other animals, and if full of life. Please contact Susanne.

Please note: The vegan lifestyle, which Farm Sanctuary promotes, generally precludes the use of animals. Domesticated companion animals are an obvious exception, because well treated companions define an issue of relationship rather than one of exploitation. Horses are exploited at the slaughterhouse by some, while cherished by others. We condemn the capture of wild horses, and we are against the indiscriminate use of horses as commodities, situations in which they’re too often abused, as with horse racing, horse rentals and horse-drawn carriage rentals. We fully recognize that horses born into domesticity can have the best of lives in the care of conscientious caregivers.
