Past Rescues
Pearl
A tiny,
emaciated, blind goat was rescued from a dismal auction house by
a caring woman who could no longer stand to watch her suffer. Pearl,
weighing only 10 pounds and unable to see, had been thrown into
a pen with twenty or more large sheep and goats. She was continually
knocked down and trampled. In her sickly condition, Pearl was not
an animal who would be sold, yet for weeks she was left to fend
for herself and suffer in these deplorable circumstances.
After
she was rescued, Pearl needed two weeks of intensive hospitalization
requiring IV antibiotics, concentrated nutrition and fluids before
she was stable enough to be transported to our New York Shelter.
For some time after her arrival, Pearl lived in one of our hospital
rehabilitation pens, so we could give her around-the-clock medical
care. Happily, thanks to eye medications and other treatments, Pearl's
sores and wounds healed quickly and she fully regained her sight.
She is now living in our main goat barn with other special needs
goats, and has become especially close with two goats named Zoop
and Simon.
Pearl was very afraid of people when she first arrived at Farm Sanctuary,
but now she is more curious than wary and has grown very comfortable
around humans. Considering all she has been through in her life,
Pearl has every right to be frightened and mistrustful of humans.
But, now that her dark memories of human cruelty have faded into
the past, a deep faith in human kindness has blossomed within her.
Now she approaches staff and visitors willingly, greeting them happily
with a friendly sniff.
Pearl
welcomes each new day with enthusiasm, grateful simply to be alive
and free. She frolics and plays constantly, tiring out even the
most spirited of her herd-mates. As all who know her can tell you,
it is not uncommon to see Pearl running sprints in her pasture,
kicking up her heels and jumping into the air with all four feet
off the ground. Her unrestrained zeal for life is unmistakable and
contagious and we are blessed to know her.
Pearl
is still in need of a loving monthly sponsor to help fund her daily
care. Please click

for Pearl, or another needy farm animal.
