Past Rescues

Samson

Samson and another goose we named, Delilah, were rescued from cruelty and neglect at the hands of a man in Upstate New York. Before their rescue, the pair was confined to a dank, dismal basement, where neither was able to see the sun or breathe fresh air. For many long months they lived on the brink of starvation, barely surviving by eating small scraps of moldy bread. They drank what little water was available to them and comforted one another as best they could. Hungry and desperate, they honked their displeasure day and night, hoping for a way out. The man responsible for the geese did nothing to help them.

Though Samson and Delilah were weak from hunger and thirst, they never gave up their honking. Finally, neighbors heard their cries and called local law enforcement for help. When the responding officers saw the conditions in which Samson and Delilah were being kept, they seized the birds without hesitation. A short time later, after the officers made some calls, the geese were happily welcomed into the open arms of caregivers at our New York Shelter. Just like that, Samson and Delilah left the darkness of the past behind them, and gratefully embraced a new life of peace and happiness at Farm Sanctuary.

Although beautiful Delilah passed away in 2004, Samson continues to enjoy sanctuary life. He is thriving in our flock and, thankfully, has made many new friends since losing his mate. At Farm Sanctuary, Samson will never have to worry about being confined or going hungry again. Here he is given the dignity and basic freedoms he - and all animals – deserve. It will be our great joy to watch him live out the rest of his life in peace.
