Nestled in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York, the rolling green pastures of Farm Sanctuary’s 275-acre New York Sanctuary are home to more than 400 rescued farm animals.
Our 26-acre Southern California Sanctuary — home to approximately 100 rescued farm animals — is located on a beautiful hacienda ranch in Acton, just 45 minutes from Hollywood.
In collaboration with the Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy, Farm Sanctuary’s research team aims to take you on a journey into the inner lives of sheep. Do sheep recognize each other? What sorts of emotions do they feel? Are they moody? Do they have individual personalities?

Lauri Torgerson-White is an animal welfare scientist and research director at Farm Sanctuary, where she works with the sanctuary residents, designing and implementing research to understand more about the inner lives of farmed animals. Lauri also helps to manage Farm Sanctuary’s future food system program. Before coming to Farm Sanctuary, Lauri was director of research and lead animal welfare specialist at Mercy For Animals. She holds a master of science in zoology from Michigan State University, where she studied animal personality. Prior to her work with Mercy For Animals, she worked to improve the lives of captive animals as the first research analyst in the Center for Zoo Animal Welfare at the Detroit Zoo. She has authored peer-reviewed publications on animal welfare, personality, and cognition; taught university-level biology and nutrition courses; and traveled all over the world visiting farms to better understand the needs of farmed animals.

Lori Marino is a neuroscientist who has studied animal behavior and intelligence for thirty years and was on the faculty of Emory University. She is Founder and Executive Director of The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy and President of the Whale Sanctuary Project.
Lori is internationally known for her work on the evolution of the brain and intelligence in dolphins and whales (as well as primates and farmed animals). She has published over 140 peer-reviewed scientific papers, book chapters, and magazine articles on comparative brain anatomy and cognition, self-awareness in nonhuman animals, human-nonhuman animal relationships, and the evolution of intelligence.
Lori also has interests in bioethics and animal law and policy.

Dr. Camille Raoult is an animal welfare and cognition scientist whose work has focused on how animals perceive their environments and how they feel. Daniel Singleton is the Animal Care Manager at Farm Sanctuary’s Watkins Glen, NY sanctuary. There he oversees a team of 12 caregivers who care for over 800 rescued farmed animals. He has over 6 years of farmed animal care and rescue experience starting as a caregiver at Farm Sanctuary’s Southern California sanctuary in 2014. When not at the sanctuary he enjoys hiking, vegan cooking and baking, and playing with his dogs.
