Outstanding Activist!

Bill George, Jr. began actively helping animals in 2000, when he found a blind skunk wandering around his backyard. He brought the skunk to a local wildlife refuge, and after seeing the place, decided to volunteer there on a weekly basis. He has remained faithful to the refuge for five years, donating a large portion of time each Saturday to help the wild animals recovering there.

In 2002, Bill heard Matthew Scully speak on NPR. The interview he heard on the radio prompted him to buy Scully's book, Dominion. As you might imagine, the book had a powerful effect on Bill, as it did on so many others, and reading it encouraged him to stop eating meat. The book also introduced Bill to Farm Sanctuary's work, and motivated him to visit our website. In 2003, Bill attended Farm Sanctuary's Farm Animal Forum in New York City and came away from the experience more committed than ever to helping farm animals in any way he could.

In his hometown of Norman, Oklahoma, Bill helped increase awareness about farm animal issues and raised much-needed funds for Farm Sanctuary's efforts by coordinating two Farm Sanctuary Walks for Farm Animals in 2003 and 2004. Activists from the surrounding area gathered for both events. They held signs, handed out leaflets, and marched down Norman's streets, boldly expressing their opposition to factory farming. This October 15 will mark the third annual Norman Walk for Farm Animals, and we have high hopes that it too will be a tremendous success, thanks to Bill's hard work and dedication to the cause.

Bill has not only coordinated Walks for Farm Animals, he has also educated the public about farm animal issues by holding screenings of Farm Sanctuary's powerful documentary, Life Behind Bars, and by distributing literature to countless Oklahomans who might otherwise never have known the truth about "food" animal production. He also attended Farm Sanctuary's Gala for Farm Animals in New York City last year and continues to support Farm Sanctuary's campaigns in any way he can. Thank you, Bill!
