Foie Gras Ban Holds…

BUT THE FIGHT IS FAR FROM OVER

Farm Sanctuary wants to thank everyone who contacted Chicago Aldermen and joined Wednesday’s demonstration at Chicago’s City Hall!

Plans by Mayor Daley and Alderman Ed Burke to overturn the foie gras ban were diverted on Wednesday, May 23, by scores of vocal and committed activists and by hundreds of Illinois residents who called their aldermen, urging them to keep the ban in place. Protesters (representing 80 percent of the Chicago population who will not eat the cruelly produced and unhealthy “delicacy,”) turned out in front of Chicago’s City Hall, placards in hand, to prevent reason from being high-jacked by elitist special interests. The law was not revisited Wednesday, but we are very concerned that it could come up again on JUNE 13.

WE MUST KEEP THE PRESSURE ON!

Foie gras is produced by force feeding ducks, causing painful bruising, lacerations, sores and organ rupture, before the birds are slaughtered. This “delicacy” is served as an appetizer in upscale restaurants. Foie gras is so cruel that over a dozen countries and the state of California have banned it.

It remains critical that you call Alderman Ed Burke and tell him you support the ban on foie gras and want it upheld. Burke’s direct number is 773-471-1414.

If you live in Chicago, we also urge you to call your own Alderman and ask him or her to vote to keep the ban on foie gras. The new aldermen were sworn in earlier this week. Please click here or call 311 (in Chicago) for updated phone numbers and addresses of aldermanic offices. If you don’t know which ward you live in, you can simply enter your address here to find out.

“Mayor Daley has said that debating foie gras is bad use of time,” said Gene Baur, President of Farm Sanctuary. “But he’s now creating a debate on the issue. The ban has already passed 48-1; the vast majority Chicagoans believe the product is cruel and atrocious, and only a very small number of people actually consume the expensive, fat laden appetizer. City Council needs to represent the will of the people, who have already made up their minds. This kind of cruelty is unacceptable in a society that values compassion.”

Please forward this email to all your friends, family and co-workers who live in Chicago and urge them to call their alderman as well.
