Library Outreach

With the economy in worse shape than it’s been for a long time, more and more people are pinching pennies and exploring bargains — and there's no better bargain than visiting the library. Not only do they lend you books and movies for free, but frequenting your library is also a terrific way to stay in the loop of what’s happening in your community and have an impact on others.

With that in mind, what better way to optimize a built-in audience for your farm animal advocacy? Setting up displays and leaving literature at your local library creates an excellent opportunity to educate others about farm animal issues and spread compassion in your community.

Here are some tips to get you started on your library outreach:

Contact Your Local Library
Contact your library and ask them how you can put up a display. Tell them a little about the display and why it is important that the community learn about farm animal issues. Whenever possible, time it to tie in with a holiday or celebration, such as using Earth Day as an opportunity to put up a Factory Farming: Destroying the Environment display. Be polite and positive when you’re speaking with a library representative. The more excited, heartfelt and knowledgeable you are about your display, the more likely they will be to accommodate your request!

Order a Display
We have three displays for you to choose from:

Please note that these are display signs only. You will need to purchase a display board from your local office supply store. We will notify you about the specific board sizes and specs when you place your display sign order. The boards usually cost around $15.

Order Literature to Complement Your Display
There is a variety of literature offered at the Farm Sanctuary store that can be used to complement our library displays:

Consider Adding Some Books
Your library may already have some pro-animal or vegan-themed books that they can add to the display. If they don’t, perhaps you can loan them some for the duration of the display. You might even consider donating some new or used pro-animal or vegan-themed books to your library! There are countless books written about these issues. Here are just a few:

Adding a Presentation
If you’re interested in public speaking, you might also consider approaching your library about hosting a Veganism101 discussion about farm animals, or in some cases, even a vegan cooking demo! Libraries often have community rooms for such events, and are on the lookout for community members who can draw people to the library. It might even become a regular gig!

Film screenings are another exciting possibility. Many libraries will allow you to host a screening of an educational film, such as Earthlings.

Keep Leaving Lit
Your local library may have an area where people can leave brochures. Why not make regular visits to your library and drop off a stack of Farm Sanctuary brochures? We offer a variety of materials to choose from in our store.

Keep Us Posted!
We want to know about your library display and your outreach efforts! Drop us a line and let us know what you’re up to. We’re also here to answer your questions or address your concerns. And if you have a library display up, take high-resolution photos and send them our way!

Thank you for making a difference for farm animals, and for supporting your local library!
