Restricted Shelter Fund

Farm Sanctuary established the Restricted Shelter Fund in 1996 to provide for the safety and well-being of the sanctuary animals. Operated as an endowment for our shelters, the Fund is generating annual income and secure funding for our farm animal friends every year, and for years to come.

Bequests to the Restricted Shelter Fund offer members a way to provide for the care of rescued farm animals as far as 100 years from now. You can even continue your giving at the same level annually as you do today.

Here’s how: Add up your contributions for one year and multiply by 20. Then, make a planned gift (through your will, life insurance policy or other method) for this amount and designate it for our Restricted Shelter Fund. This endowment will provide an annual gift to Farm Sanctuary at approximately the same dollar value you are currently giving. Long after you are gone — even 100 years from now — Farm Sanctuary will remember your compassion and generosity every time we receive your annual contribution.

Our financial managers invest the principal of the gift, withdraw the income annually (the interest generated from the fund) and, because the principal is kept intact, the funds never dry up. Your commitment extends far into the future, helping hundreds more needy farm animals.

Here’s an example of how this works: Mary gives Farm Sanctuary $300 each year. She may give it in smaller chunks or as one annual gift. She knows that so many animals count on her giving, and is concerned about who will support their care when she is no longer here. She learns that she can bequeath $6,000 to Farm Sanctuary’s Restricted Shelter Fund, and the initial income in the first year will be $300 (assuming a five percent return).

Income will grow as the Restricted Shelter Fund appreciates over time. She is pleased because she knows that money from the Fund will be used to defend and protect farm animals each year, just as though she were sending a check to Farm Sanctuary herself.

A thoughtful, special gift like this creates a lasting legacy of caring that will continue to aid farm animals for years to come.

Your Bequest at Work

Your bequest to the Restricted Shelter Fund can help assure that Farm Sanctuary has the resources needed to help animals like Mary Claire, rescued from slaughter when she was being sold as a Thanksgiving promotion at a salvage yard in Southern California. She and 95 other sweet turkeys are now living happily at our California Shelter.

The guaranteed shelter funding provided by the Restricted Shelter Fund helps Farm Sanctuary to respond to emergency rescue cases and provide a “happy ending” for so many needy animals.
