Chicago, IL: Ongoing Demonstrations for Victims of Foie Gras Production

May 14th was a sad day for animals and compassionate Chicagoans – a true step backward for humanity. The Chicago City Council voted to repeal the ban on foie gras, which it had passed in 2006 by a vote of 48 – 1.

The repeal of the ban is an example of unscrupulous politics at its worst. Alderman Thomas Tunney, former head of the Illinois Restaurant Association, bowed to the foie gras lobby, in a secretive, backdoor vote. He rushed the measure, bypassing debate on the proposal, knowing that if presented with the facts and video evidence of animal cruelty at foie gras facilities, the Chicago City Council would have voted overwhelming against the repeal.

Foie gras production is a hideously cruel industry. Learn more information about foie gras at www.nofoiegras.org.

How you can help:

  1. No Foie Gras Campaign in Chicago takes to the street! Remind the public why the City Council passed the ban originally by handing out educational leaflets, holding peaceful demonstrations at restaurants that serve foie gras, and talking to restaurant or store owners about keeping foie gras from their menus. Please contact us to get involved and check out our calendar for a list of ongoing demonstrations.

  2. Put the City Council on notice - contact your alderman, as a constituent and a voter, to express your disappointment over the Council's vote.

  3. Take steps for a new, broader ban by contacting your state legislators. Take this opportunity to meet with them now, in person while they are out of session and in your community. Urge them to strongly support the bill to ban foie gras production and sale that will be introduced when they reconvene in January 2009. A face-to-face meeting has the impact of 100 calls or emails.
