Proposed Legislation and Public Policy

Laws are enacted to reflect societal values, but laws addressing how animals are treated on farms are inconsistent with popular concerns. Farmed animals are excluded from most federal and state anti-cruelty laws, so animals used for food production are legally subjected to intolerable suffering. Farm Sanctuary campaigns target unconscionable animal cruelty by changing policies, laws, and corporate practices that are not inline with popular sentiments. Please take a moment to review the current legislation that is under discussion, and then take action.

Take Action for Farm Animals

Help Protect Downed Pigs and Other Farm Animals

In 2009, President Obama announced a new rule that prevents downed cattle from being slaughtered for human food. While this was a step in the right direction, the USDA has no rules in place to protect downed pigs, sheep, goats, other farm animals. Please take a minute now to contact Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and urge him to extend this rule to include downers of other species.
