Farm Sanctuary’s locations in Southern California include our sanctuary in Acton (5200 Escondido Canyon Road) and our office space in Los Angeles (608 Mateo Street). We offer a variety of regular volunteer positions including farm chores, office tasks, community outreach, and visitor program and event assistance. Please note the minimum age requirement for all positions is 18 years of age unless otherwise noted. Our Acton location also offers monthly work parties and has availability for private group work parties. Individuals with an interest in volunteering professional skills (e.g. carpentry, accounting, landscaping, etc.) are also encouraged to apply.

VOLUNTEER TOUR GUIDE – ACTON SANCTUARY

Time Commitment Required: One regular tour day a week for first month of volunteering, and two regular tour days each month thereafter for one year. Applicants available both Saturdays and Sundays preferred.

Experience Requirements: Knowledgeable about farm animal issues and committed to veganism. Prior experience and/or comfort with public speaking.

Responsibilities: The volunteer tour guide plays a critical role in our program, joining a select team trained to conduct tours at our Acton sanctuary. While this position requires a greater investment of time for both training and volunteering, it is highly rewarding and enables individuals to make stronger connections both with our guests and our sanctuary residents.  Volunteer Tour Guides are required to  learn the Farm Sanctuary tour script and animal stories and will be expected to start giving tours within two months of the start of their volunteer position. Volunteers tour guides will also assist with all aspects of the on-site visitor program, including: staffing the main gate and welcoming guests to the sanctuary; answering questions on veganism and factory farming; staffing the gift shop and assisting with purchases; and assisting with tours by helping with gates. Volunteers must be especially mindful of safety and proper messaging with guests.

Qualifications: Knowledgeable about farm animal issues and committed to veganism, comfortable working in and around animal areas, experience and/or comfort with public speaking, ability to effectively communicate with the public, willingness to work in all weather conditions, ability to perform some physical labor and light lifting, reliable and dependable, team player, positive attitude.

Specifications: In order to allow proper time for training, we request a commitment of one regular tour day (Saturday and/or Sunday) a week for one month.  After first month, we request a minimum commitment of two regular tour days each month thereafter for one year. Volunteer shifts are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition, we ask Volunteer Tour Guides to commit to volunteering for at least two Farm Sanctuary events; events are held at various dates throughout the year.

Volunteer Tour Assistant – Acton Sanctuary

Time Commitment Required: Two regular tour days each month for one year. Applicants available both Saturdays and Sundays preferred.

Experience Requirements: Knowledgeable about farm animal issues and committed to veganism.

Responsibilities: Volunteers will assist with all aspects of the on-site visitor program, including: staffing the main gate and welcoming guests to the sanctuary; answering questions on veganism and factory farming; staffing the gift shop and assisting with purchases; and assisting with tours by helping with gates. Volunteer Office Assistant – Los Angeles Office

Time Commitment Required: 8 hours per week for a minimum of 1 month.

Experience Requirements: Previous administrative or data entry experience preferred.

Responsibilities: Provide general support for staff at this location, may be asked to assist with a broad range of tasks. These may include administrative support such as data entry and filing projects, copying, scanning, post office runs, and general office upkeep. Responsibilities will be determined based on current organizational and office needs.

Qualifications: Excellent communication and outreach skills, ability to work independently, strong internet research and computer skills, flexibility and willingness to work on a variety of tasks. Commitment to Farm Sanctuary’s goals and programs required with active interest in animal protection issues beneficial to many work assignments.

Specifications: We request a volunteer commitment of eight hours per week for a minimum of one month; longer term commitments are preferred. Schedules can be discussed during the interview process and applicants will be matched to projects based on their skills and experience.

Volunteer Restaurant Outreach Coordinator

Time Commitment Required: One shift per week for a minimum of three months.

Experience Requirements: Knowledge about farm animal issues and veganism.

Responsibilities: Volunteers will assist with Los Angeles-area restaurant outreach, including: seeking permission for the placement of Farm Sanctuary’s Animal Acres “Visit” flier in veg-friendly establishments in order to increase our exposure in Los Angeles; following-up on existing flier placements to ensure sufficient quantity; and updating our database accordingly.

Qualifications: Knowledgeable about farm animal issues and veganism; ability to effectively communicate with the public, work independently, and follow detailed instructions; reliable and dependable; team player; positive attitude. Must be able to provide own transportation.

Specifications: We request a minimum commitment of three months, with a set schedule of one shift per week, to be determined.

Volunteer Farm Assistant – Acton Sanctuary

Time Commitment Required: 1 four hour shift; recurring commitment encouraged.

Experience Requirements: Must have previously attended a work party and/or volunteer orientation.

Age Requirement Exceptions: Volunteers ages 12-17 will be considered but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Responsibilities: Assist with barn cleaning and other grounds maintenance projects that are determined daily according to our greatest and most timely needs. Farm chores and projects may include, but are not limited to, barn cleaning, gardening, fence repair, painting, and raking. These chores are not glamorous and may be physically demanding and/or repetitious; however, every task assists us with carrying out our daily mission of rescuing, protecting, and caring for farm animals in need.

Qualifications: Ability to work in all weather conditions, ability to perform strenuous physical labor (ability to assist with heavy lifting preferred), commitment to Farm Sanctuary’s goals and programs. No animal experience necessary. If you have any special skills such as carpentry, gardening, plumbing, etc., please note on your application.

Specifications: All farm assistant volunteers must attend an orientation before volunteering at the sanctuary. Once orientation has been attended, farm assistant volunteers may request to volunteer on days that suit their schedule but must notify a designated Farm Sanctuary staff member at least a week in advance. Preferred volunteer shift begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.

Volunteer Shelter Assistant – Acton Sanctuary

Time Commitment Required: 1 full day shift per week for a minimum of 3 months.

Experience Requirements: Minimum of 20 hours as a Volunteer Farm Assistant in the past year.

Responsibilities: Assist with various tasks including shelter laundry, shelter hospital cleaning, feeding and helping to care for animals who are current residents in the hospital area, animal monitoring projects, collecting eggs, cleaning animal bowls and troughs, and other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications: Ability to work in all weather conditions, ability to perform strenuous physical labor and heavy lifting, willingness to follow detailed Farm Sanctuary work protocols, commitment to Farm Sanctuary’s goals and programs. Previous animal care experience preferred but not required.

Specifications: All shelter volunteers must attend an orientation before volunteering at the sanctuary. Volunteers must commit to at least 1 shift per week for a minimum of 3 months; longer commitments are preferred. Shelter shifts begin at 7 a.m. and end at 4 or 5 p.m.

Event Volunteer – Acton Sanctuary

Time Commitment Required: Varies by event; generally involves at least a minimum six-hour shift.

Experience Requirements: No experience required.

Responsibilities: Volunteer roles will vary by event but may include guest registration, parking, meal prep and service, cleaning and upkeep. Volunteers must be especially mindful of safety and proper messaging with guests.

Qualifications: Willingness to work in all weather conditions, ability to perform some physical labor and light lifting, reliable and dependable, team player, positive attitude.

Specifications: Volunteer shifts will be defined based on event needs and may include opportunities to assist with advance event preparation. Applicants expressing interest in this position will be notified of individual event opportunities and requirements.

Finance Volunteer

Time Commitment Required: 5 hours per week for a minimum of 1 month.

Experience Requirements: Current or prior professional finance or accounting experience, or student with focus on accounting or finance preferred. Other experience coupled with strong Excel skills will also be considered.

Responsibilities: Provide support to the CFO and Accounting Manager on a variety of financial analyses and related projects. Projects may include analyzing survey and event data, preparing financial analyses of programmatic activities, participating in policy and procedure development, and assisting with reconciliation projects. Specific responsibilities will vary and will be determined based on current organizational and departmental needs at the time of service.

Qualifications: Proficiency in Excel required. Strong communication skills, initiative, ability to work independently, and interest in Farm Sanctuary’s goals and mission required. Familiarity with QuickBooks reports preferred. Candidates with prior experience in financial analysis or bookkeeping, CPA, or auditing experience strongly preferred.

Specifications: Specifications: We request a commitment of at least 5 hours per week for a minimum of one month, but additional hours and longer term commitments are preferred. Schedules can be discussed during the interview process. Location in or near Los Angeles is preferred, but remote volunteers will also be considered.
