Animal Care Internship

The Animal Care internship builds upon the skills learned in the Shelter Projects internship and includes increased responsibility in the areas of animal feeds and waters, shelter security, and assisting with animal health care. The contributions of Animal Care Interns help provide lifesaving care to hundreds of farm animals and interns gain unique experience related to farm animal care and the basics of running a sanctuary.

Please Note: Individuals who wish to be considered for the Animal Care Internship must commit to at least a two month Shelter Projects Internship, with three months preferred. While applicants may note interest in this advanced position in their online application, individuals will not be considered for this position until they have successfully completed at least one month of their Shelter Project Internship. There are limited Animal Care Internship opportunities each month and acceptance will be based not only on intern skills, experience and performance but also the shelter department’s current needs.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Shelter projects shift duties
  • Feeding shelter animals
  • Assisting with hay feeds during winter months
  • Assisting with farm errands including vet trips
  • Closing animals in barns at night
  • Assisting with animal health checks
  • Observing, recording, and discussing animal observations
  • Assisting with basic animal care procedures
  • Other tasks and duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a 1-month shelter projects internship
  • Ability to work in harsh/all weather conditions
  • Strong animal behavior observation skills with keen attention to details
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and lifting
  • Ability to complete detailed tasks as assigned and within required timeframe
  • Team player with ability to work well with variety of people
  • Good communication skills
  • Very reliable and dependable
  • Commitment to Farm Sanctuary’s goals and programs
  • One year experience at animal care facility preferred

Specifications:

  • Volunteer commitment of 40 hours per week
  • Shelter department interns are assigned evening shelter security shifts
  • Two-month commitment required, three month commitment preferred (including 1 month on shelter projects internship)
  • Shared housing available on sanctuary premises
  • Position available in Watkins Glen, NY
