Volunteer at Farm Sanctuary

Volunteer Day at Farm Sanctuary

Volunteers have been an integral part of the Farm Sanctuary team since we began back in 1986, and are key contributors to our success. Any action you take will help to improve the lives of farm animals and help us to carry out our mission of protecting farm animals from cruelty, inspiring change in the way society views and treats farm animals, and promoting compassionate vegan living.

From our sanctuaries in Watkins Glen, NY and Acton, CA to our office space in downtown Los Angeles, we offer a variety of volunteer positions including farm chores, office tasks, community outreach, and visitor program and event assistance. Individuals with an interest in volunteering professional skills (e.g. carpentry, accounting, landscaping, etc) are also encouraged to apply. Opportunities vary depending on the time of year and the needs of our team.

Both sanctuaries also offer monthly work parties and are available for private group work parties.

Please review the volunteer opportunities and specific position requirements prior to completing our online application. All applicants should be committed to Farm Sanctuary’s goals and programs and all positions have a minimum age requirement of 18 unless otherwise noted in the position listing.

Volunteer applications will be processed and then forwarded to the appropriate department for review. Phone or in-person interviews may be required for some positions and volunteer shifts must be confirmed in advance by Farm Sanctuary staff. Depending on position or interests, applications may take a few weeks to process and volunteer opportunities are filled on a first-come, first-served basis depending on availability.

For most opportunities, you can complete our basic volunteer application. Please feel free to contact our National Volunteer Coordinator with questions or for additional information.

Lendlease volunteer day at Farm Sanctuary

All work party days are devoted to activities that help us operate our sanctuaries and contribute to the success of our education and advocacy programs. Farm chores and projects generally include activities such as barn cleaning and grounds maintenance projects. Work party chores are not glamorous and may be physically demanding and/or repetitious; however, every task assists us with carrying out our daily mission of rescuing, protecting, and caring for farm animals in need. Monthly chores and projects are determined immediately prior to the work party according to our greatest and most timely needs.

Interns eating lunch at Farm Sanctuary
  • Underage volunteers: For important safety reasons, individuals aged 12 to 17 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in order to work inside any animal housing barns. Children under 12 are not allowed to volunteer at the shelter.
  • All volunteers receive a complimentary tour of Farm Sanctuary during their visit.
  • Volunteers are encouraged to bring a vegan dish to share for a work party potluck lunch. This is a great time to get to know other compassionate individuals. If you have any questions about vegan food, please let us know and we would be happy to help with potluck dish suggestions.
  • Pre-registration is required and availability may be limited to 20 volunteers or less each month. Due to the nature of shelter work, we also may not be able to accommodate groups of 6 or more. Large groups will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Volunteers are asked to commit to 6-7 hours for the day, which includes time for lunch and the farm tour; specific location schedules are listed below.
  • Work parties are held rain or shine, though cancellations may occur due to hazardous weather conditions, resident animal health concerns, or other circumstances.
