“Never underestimate a vegan hippie chick with a racecar,” has been Leilani Münter’s motto since her racing dreams brought her to Charlotte in 2002. In addition to her many accolades and achievements on the track, Leilani has been just as widely recognized for her commitment to green living. Discovery’s Planet Green named her the world’s #1 eco athlete and ELLE magazine awarded her their “Genius Award.” A longtime friend of Farm Sanctuary, Leilani is an advocate for solar power, electric cars, a plant-based diet, and animal rights and is active in lobbying for and representing these causes in Washington, D.C. and beyond. But while her activism has taken her all over the planet, she had never until the summer of 2017 met her neighbors to the east (many of whom are just four hours away) in so-called “CAFO Country.” This is not the North Carolina she thought she knew. She is determined to help shed light on environmental injustices delivered by Smithfield and other factory farming giants, who rule the land by polluting and poisoning the air and groundwater.
