The people of Rhode Island are opposed to one of the most extreme forms of animal cruelty: force-feeding ducks and geese for foie gras. In fact, 7-in-10 Rhode Islanders support a foie gras ban.

Yet, despite the will of the people, the state Senate has not held a vote on SB 403—the bill that would finally ban the production and sale of foie gras in Rhode Island.

Ducks and geese suffer immensely for foie gras. To produce this cruel “luxury” dish, a bird is force-fed through a tube forced down their throat, until their liver swells to 10 times its natural size.

We’re increasing public pressure on the state Senate to act, including through this powerful op-ed in The Providence Journal written by Farm Sanctuary board member and lifelong Rhode Island resident, Robert Procaccianti.

“At Farm Sanctuary, we have seen the aftermath of this cruelty firsthand. Rescued ducks Monet and Matisse arrived at the sanctuary, terrified of humans, their bodies injured and diseased with sores and broken feathers,” writes Robert. “They were lucky—they escaped. Most foie gras ducks do not.”
