Safeguard Animal Protection Laws: Join Us in Fighting the EATS Act 2.0!

We need your help. New legislation in the Senate threatens existing farm animal protection laws and undermines states’ abilities to ensure food safety, public health, and environmental protection. Tell your elected officials to reject the Food Security and Farm Protection Act (S.1326) today!

A bill identical to the EATS (Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression) Act has been introduced in Congress. The Food Security and Farm Protection Act—contrary to its name—will nullify animal protection laws and potentially end the protections of workers, communities, and the environment.

The language in this bill presents many dangers to the rights and safety of the American public. It overrides state and local laws governing agricultural production, giving factory farms uninhibited freedom in their production decisions—no matter the consequences on farmers, families, and communities.

The Food Security and Farm Protection Act puts food safety regulations at risk for everyone from producers and workers to consumers and communities. Additionally, it takes away the power of states to regulate factory farming practices that harm animals, people, and the planet—making exposure to pesticides, child labor injustices, contaminated natural resources, and animal welfare atrocities more common throughout our country.

Email Body:

Dear [name],

As your constituent, I write in strong opposition to the Food Security and Farm Protection Act (S.1326) introduced by Representative Ernst. Please reject the bill and the inclusion of any legislative text resembling the former EATS Act in the Farm Bill. This language overrides the will of voters and would give factory farm polluters free rein to harm families, farmers, and communities. Please do all you can to ensure that neither this dangerous, overreaching policy nor anything like it is passed.

The Food Security and Farm Protection Act is identical to the EATS (Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression) Act, legislation that failed to pass in prior sessions because it threatened to remove protections of voter and state rights, agricultural workers, consumer food safety, and natural resources. Policies like this and its predecessors have generated overwhelming opposition from a diverse set of more than 170 groups, plus hundreds of federal and state legislators, individual farmers, veterinary professionals, faith leaders, legal experts, and newspaper editorials, including USA Today.

Should this bill pass, our food safety laws could all be under threat. These include laws that regulate chemicals in baby food, prevent dangerous pesticide use, prohibit child labor, and ensure animal welfare and environmental protection.

S.1326 goes against state decisions, bipartisan consensus, and previous Supreme Court rulings. Fourteen states have laws regarding the intensive confinement of farm animals, and family farmers across the country have made significant investments to comply with state laws that could be undone with this bill. Eight in 10 American voters, including nearly equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats, support bans on intensive confinement being enacted in their own states. In 2023, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of California’s Proposition 12, a law addressing animal welfare and public health risks caused by the extreme confinement of farm animals in factory farms.

The dangerous and undemocratic Food Security and Farm Protection Act must be stopped. I urge you to advocate for its removal to protect voters, states’ rights, and animals in the Farm Bill.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration, and I look forward to your response.

Signed
