When a new animal resident arrives at Farm Sanctuary, our caregivers thoughtfully match them with the herd or flock they’re best suited to, based on their personalities and social needs. For example, Cali, a shy goat, lives with a flock of gentle sheep. Hope, a timid donkey, was paired with Dorado, an outgoing companion with a track record of making others feel comfortable and safe.

George pig arrived in 2019 and was placed with a group of small, gentle pigs like him. Since those early days, he has grown in both size and confidence, and his needs for play and socialization have grown along with him. In fact, George has come so far that he’s leveled up to our highest-energy play group!

George’s caregivers knew he would thrive with companions who are a better match for the self-assured, social, and exuberant pig he has become. They introduced him to the group, and he’s fitting in beautifully!

George spends his days playing with his new friends, snorting with joy, and doing “zoomies” around the yard with delightful abandon. At bedtime, he finds a couple of buddies—like his best friend, Pickles pig—and wedges himself between them for a cozy cuddle. He awakes each morning rejuvenated and ready to continue the fun.

Social and trusting with his human caretakers, too, George wags his tail and grunts excitedly when his favorite people come to say hello. He eagerly accepts nose boops and belly rubs—and when a midday sandwich is offered, his snorts grow even louder.

Farm Sanctuary doesn’t just rescue and rehabilitate animals—we help them grow into who they were always meant to be. George has blossomed into such a vibrant and loving pig that it’s hard to believe his life almost ended tragically as soon as it began.

George was born at a New York petting zoo. The runt of the litter, he couldn’t compete with his siblings for food and fell sick with pneumonia and parasites. At four months old, he weighed a mere seven pounds, the size of a one- or two-week-old piglet.

At working farms and petting zoos, animals are seen as commodities to be exploited for food or entertainment and discarded when they’re no longer of economic value. Like many sick animals at these facilities, George was denied treatment because his care would have cost more than he was considered worth. Instead of receiving the medical attention he needed, George was left for dead.

Weak and starving, George could barely lift his head. He huddled and shivered in the corner of the barn in desperate need of help.

While countless visitors to the zoo walked past George, one compassionate guest noticed that something was terribly wrong. She asked the zoo’s owner if she could take George home, changing his life forever.

The rescuer helped bring George to Farm Sanctuary in November 2019. His condition was critical, and his future looked grim. He was lethargic and unresponsive, suffering from severe pneumonia and Balantidium coli, a highly contagious intestinal parasite.

With proper veterinary care, nutritious food, and the loving attention of our team, George began to recover. He gained weight and became more talkative and playful, grunting happily and running around his pen to show his excitement. Everyone who met George fell in love with him, and he seemed to love everyone right back.

George’s transformation is a powerful testament to the life-changing difference between true sanctuary and exploitative operations like petting zoos. At Farm Sanctuary, George and all of our residents are recognized as unique individuals, valued not for what they can produce but for who they are.
