Four Farm Animals Rescued Just in Time

Evie and Margaretta

Billions of animals are farmed each year, and most live and die never having experienced life outside the confines of factory farms. But a lucky few find sanctuary, and for some, rescue comes in the nick of time.

Since Farm Sanctuary’s founding 40 years ago, we have rescued farm animals from many urgent situations. Some escaped farms and slaughterhouses, while others survived natural disasters or cruel neglect, and more. Everyone comes to our sanctuaries with a different story, but all share the same need for the kindness, care, and dignity we offer.

Rescue alone can’t solve the problems caused by factory farming, so we also work to educate the public about its harms and advocate for a compassionate food system. But for these four individuals—and the hundreds living at Farm Sanctuary—rescue changed everything, and their stories are inspiring compassion and progress for farm animals everywhere.

Below, you’ll find four moving stories of hope against all odds.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish had arrived at a slaughterhouse. She was minutes away from death, but a connection between activists and a transport driver changed her fate, proving that conversations between unlikely allies—and just one compassionate choice—can do so much good.

During one of their vigils, Orange County Animal Save activists spoke with a driver bringing animals to the slaughterhouse, and he seemed open to surrendering a hen. The following month, they caught up with the same driver, and Billie was delivered safely into the hands of her rescuers.

Now in her forever home at Farm Sanctuary, Billie is dancing through life, relaxing as she listens to her favorite tunes and gets serenaded with instruments by her caregivers. From surviving a close call to experiencing her very own concerts, Billie has found the joy that once seemed impossible.

Evie

Evie gave birth to twin lambs, Jeanne and Margaretta, nestled in the safety of sanctuary. Thankfully, her daughters will never experience the suffering their mother once faced.

Found by authorities, Evie and more than 200 other animals were being severely neglected on a North Carolina farm. Some were starving, while others had died before help arrived—and Evie was in dire need of care. We worked quickly with other sanctuaries to save the survivors, welcoming 10 sheep to Farm Sanctuary.

As we nursed her back to health, we found that Evie was among three pregnant sheep from this rescue, and our hearts were filled with delight as their lambs were born loved and protected: first, Ashley, then Samson, and last but never least, Evie’s twin girls.

It was so close for Evie; her story nearly ended on that cruel farm. But one rescue transformed the lives of multiple generations.

Griffin

Griffin would have been among millions of turkeys killed for Thanksgiving, except he wasn’t on a factory farm—he was released in Los Angeles to be hunted. So, likely free for the first time, but in grave danger, Griffin ran.

Thankfully, he wasn’t caught by someone who saw him as a holiday centerpiece, but by a family who knew he deserved to live. Griffin’s rescuers turned to Farm Sanctuary for his permanent safe place to land.

First, we got him the care he needed, and while he was adjusting, a veterinary team ensured that Griffin was getting enough nutrition. At sanctuary, Griffin was still nervous at first, but we settled him into a temporary area filled with stuffies to play with, a mirror to see his handsome reflection, and gentle sheep neighbors, Biscuit and Pippa. Soon, he was feeling at home.

Now, Griffin is vocal each morning when he sees us, and salad time is his favorite part of the day! He can often be found puffing out his feathers to show off for the turkey ladies.

Hilda

Gene Baur with Hilda

Gene and Hilda

Since 1986, Farm Sanctuary has saved thousands of farm animals from abuse, neglect, and exploitation—and it all started with Hilda

This gentle and courageous sheep was our first rescue, found left for dead while our Co-founder, Gene Baur, was investigating at a stockyard. As Gene walked by, Hilda bravely lifted her head for help. She went on to live 11 happy years at our New York sanctuary, where a plaque in our Rainbow Bridge Memorial Garden honors her life and legacy.

Sadly, Hilda’s story is not unique. Far too many farm animals are treated like products or tossed aside when they’re deemed unprofitable. Yet, that’s one of the reasons Hilda’s story must be told—and it has changed countless hearts and minds in the 40 years since her rescue, helping many to choose compassionate living. What an incredible impact on our world for someone once discarded like trash.
