Our Watkins Glen, NY, location offers a variety of regular volunteer positions ranging from farm chores to office tasks to visitor program and event assistance. Please note the minimum age requirement for all positions is 18 years of age unless otherwise noted. This location also offers monthly work parties and is available for private group work parties. Individuals with an interest in volunteering professional skills (e.g. carpentry, accounting, landscaping, etc) are also encouraged to apply.

Volunteer Farm Assistant

Time Commitment Required: 1 six-hour shift; recurring commitment encouraged

Experience Requirements: No experience required.

Age Requirement Exceptions: Volunteers ages 12-17 will be considered but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Responsibilities: Assist with barn cleaning and other grounds maintenance projects that are determined daily according to our greatest and most timely needs. Farm chores and projects may include, but are not limited to, barn cleaning, gardening, fence repair, painting, and raking. These chores are not glamorous and may be physically demanding and/or repetitious; however, every task assists us with carrying out our daily mission of rescuing, protecting, and caring for farm animals in need.

Qualifications: Ability to work in all weather conditions, ability to perform strenuous physical labor (ability to assist with heavy lifting preferred), commitment to Farm Sanctuary’s goals and programs. No animal experience necessary. If you have any special skills such as carpentry, gardening, plumbing etc., please note on your application.

Specifications: All farm assistant volunteers must attend an orientation before volunteering at the sanctuary. Once orientation has been attended, farm assistant volunteers may volunteer on days that suit their schedule as long as a Farm Sanctuary staff member has been notified in advance. Preferred volunteer shift begins at 8am and ends at 2:30pm.

Volunteer Shelter Assistant

Time Commitment Required: 1 full-day shift per week for a minimum of 3 months.

Experience Requirements: Minimum of 20 hours as a Volunteer Farm Assistant in the past year.

Responsibilities: Assist with various tasks including shelter laundry, shelter hospital cleaning, feeding and helping to care for animals who are current residents in the hospital area, animal monitoring projects, collecting eggs, cleaning animal bowls and troughs, and other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications: Ability to work in all weather conditions, ability to perform strenuous physical labor and heavy lifting, willingness to follow detailed Farm Sanctuary’s work protocols, commitment to Farm Sanctuary goals and programs. Previous animal care experience preferred but not required.

Specifications: All shelter volunteers must attend an orientation before volunteering at the sanctuary. Volunteers must commit to at least 1 shift per week for a minimum of 3 months, longer commitments are preferred. Shelter shifts begin at 7 a.m. and end at 4 or 5 p.m.

Volunteer Office Assistant

Time Commitment Required: 1 four-hour shift per week for a minimum of two months.

Experience Requirements: Previous administrative or data entry experience preferred.

Responsibilities: Provide general support for staff, which may include assisting with a variety of tasks. Administrative support such as data entry and filing projects, copying, scanning, post office runs, assisting with event registrations, assisting with Farm Sanctuary member correspondence, and general office upkeep. Responsibilities will be determined based on current organizational and office needs.

Qualifications: Good communication skills, ability to work independently, internet research and computer skills, excel proficiency beneficial, flexibility and willingness to work on a variety of tasks. Commitment to Farm Sanctuary’s goals and programs required, with active interest in animal protection issues beneficial to some work assignments.

Specifications: We request a volunteer commitment of at least four hours per week for a minimum of two months; additional hours and longer term commitments are preferred. Schedules can be discussed during the interview process and applicants will be matched to projects based on their skills and experience.

Volunteer Visitor Program Assistant

Time Commitment Required: Two regular tour days each month for 6 months (May-October).

Experience Requirements: Knowledge about farm animal issues and commitment to veganism required.

Responsibilities: Volunteers may assist with all aspects of the on-site visitor program, including: welcoming guests to the sanctuary; answering questions on veganism and factory farming; staffing the gift shop and assisting with purchases; assisting with tours by helping with gates and; assisting with cleaning and upkeep of Visitor Barn and visitor cabins. Volunteers must be especially mindful of safety and proper messaging with guests.

Qualifications: Knowledgeable about farm animal issues and committed to veganism, comfortable working in and around animal areas, ability to effectively communicate with the public, willingness to work in all weather conditions, ability to perform some physical labor and light lifting, reliable and dependable, team player, positive attitude.

Specifications: We request a minimum commitment of two regular tour days (Saturday and/or Sunday in May, September, and October; Wednesday–Sunday in June, July, and August) each month for 6 months (May-October). Volunteer shifts are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Applicants available both Saturdays and Sundays are preferred; volunteer shifts can be discussed during the interview process.

Event Volunteer

Time Commitment Required: Varies by event, generally involves at least a minimum six-hour shift.

Experience Requirements: No experience required.

Age Requirement Exceptions: Volunteers ages 12-17 will be considered but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Responsibilities: Volunteer roles will vary by event but may include guest registration, parking, meal prep and service, cleaning and upkeep of Visitor Barn and visitor cabins. Volunteers must be especially mindful of safety and proper messaging with guests.

Qualifications: Willingness to work in all weather conditions, ability to perform some physical labor and light lifting, reliable and dependable, team player, positive attitude.

Specifications: Volunteer shifts will be defined based on event needs and may include opportunities to assist with advance event preparation. Applicants expressing interest in this position will be notified of individual event opportunities and requirements.
