Give a (Farm Animal) Mom a Break This Mother’s Day

All moms deserve a break for Mother’s Day, especially our rescued farm animal mothers!

Now in the freedom of sanctuary, these rescued animal moms are given the chance to care for their families – and our hearts are full, knowing that we can provide a haven where mother and baby will always be together.

Make this Mother’s Day even more meaningful by giving a farm animal mom a well-deserved break with a restful “spa day!” Meet mamas Mia pig, Evie sheep, and Liberty cow below, and choose your gift.

When you give by May 12, you will sponsor the daily care of our rescued animal residents and support us as we offer three moms the extra pampering they so richly deserve.

Like human mothers, farm animal moms care for their young. Sheep talk to their lambs with distinct sounds. Pigs build warm nests. Cows gently groom their calves.

At Farm Sanctuary, there are adoptive moms, too – like Jackie cow, who was grieving her calf when she arrived. She soon welcomed orphaned calf Dixon into her heart, becoming the mom he needed, and their love has helped them heal.

Celebrate farm animal moms and all mother figures! This year, for a one-time donation of $35, you will give Evie sheep a back massage, Mia pig a mud bath, or Liberty cow a “blowout” (brushing).

Can’t decide? Add another “service” – or gift the “full spa day package” of all three for $90!

Meet these loving moms below to learn their stories and why they deserve a break this Mother’s Day:

Mia pig

  • Rescue date: January 17, 2018
  • Lives at: Farm Sanctuary New York
  • History: Saved along with her five piglets from a backyard butcher cruelty case
  • Her Story: Mia is a loving mother of five, but her family once faced a terrible fate. In 2018, Farm Sanctuary returned to a backyard butcher for a second rescue. Again, we found horrible suffering. Pigs were in filthy facilities without food and water. With the local SPCA, we rescued those desperately needing care, including Mia – underweight and suffering from mange. Sadly, some of her babies had died, but she had five tiny, day-old piglets. Mia was understandably protective, once tearing down our hospital doors to reach her babies during health checks! But Crawford, Helena, Iman, Wayne, and Woody have grown into healthy pigs in our care. Seeing that we’re kind to her piglets, Mia has lowered her guard enough for the occasional affection. Thankfully, the backyard butcher can never “own” animals again – and Mama Mia’s family will always be safe with us. We’re so happy to give this strong mom of five a break with a special mud bath!

Evie sheep

  • Rescue date: October 12, 2023
  • Lives at: Farm Sanctuary New York
  • History: Now a mom of twins, rescued from neglect while pregnant.
  • Her Story: Evie sheep gave birth to twins in the safety of Farm Sanctuary, but had she not been rescued, they likely all would have perished. In North Carolina, authorities found over 200 animals severely neglected, resulting in 90 counts of cruelty against the farm’s owner. Some were starving or sick; for others, help had come too late. Working with other organizations, we saved as many lives as we could. As our caregivers nursed Evie back to health, we soon discovered a happy surprise: she was among multiple pregnant sheep in the flock! Thankfully, on February 17, 2024, Evie gave birth to twin lambs named Jeanne and Margaretta – two of four lambs born in our care after we rescued their moms from the same cruel farm. Evie is a gentle, caring mother. We’re so happy she’ll have her family by her side. We’re so glad to give this mom of two, who has been through so much, a break with a relaxing back rub!

Liberty cow

  • Rescue date: February 11, 2020
  • Lives at: Farm Sanctuary Los Angeles
  • History: Released by a slaughterhouse owner after giving birth to her calf
  • Her Story: Liberty gave birth to Indigo inside a Los Angeles slaughterhouse. Facing certain death herself, she now had to worry about the fate of her newborn calf, too. Who could have predicted that actor Joaquin Phoenix would come to the rescue just one day after winning his Academy Award? Yet, that’s exactly the happy ending that awaited after LA Animal Save confirmed Liberty and Indigo’s release from Manning Beef. Accompanied by Farm Sanctuary’s Gene Baur and filmmaker Shaun Monson, Joaquin carried young Indigo toward a life of forever family. Today, Liberty and Indigo are safe by each other’s side at Farm Sanctuary Los Angeles, and their future could not be brighter. Caring Liberty soon befriended another mom, Jackie cow, who was grieving the loss of her calf. Liberty shows us that there’s no one way to nurture and love. We’re thrilled to give this brave mom a break with a “blowout” brushing!
