Eagle Scouts Build Beautiful Benches and Bird Perches for Farm Sanctuary

Thanks to an inspiring troop of young Eagle Scouts, Farm Sanctuary visitors for years to come will have a place to sit and learn how to help farm animals.

In November 2025, an Eagle Scout troop leader reached out to us to explore ideas for a service project that would raise funds for Farm Sanctuary and support our mission. That inspiring conversation led to a unique collaboration for both animals and humans at our Acton, California, sanctuary: The kind young Scouts would soon build benches for our visitor center and perches for our aviaries!

We were thrilled to meet the troop in person in January of this year, when they visited to take measurements. As they left, feeling ready to get to work in February, they set out to raise funds for their materials—and ended up raising an additional $800 to support Farm Sanctuary!

We invited the Eagle Scouts to return to Farm Sanctuary and enjoy a special tour on the day they would bring their creations to us. That exciting day came in March, as the troop arrived with gorgeous, handcrafted wooden benches.

These benches are now in our Learning Center, where they’re already helping to make guests comfortable and engaged! There, our tours begin with a moving video that introduces Farm Sanctuary, the animals we help, and the importance of rescue, education, and advocacy.

They also delivered the beautiful perches they made for our rescued residents, and it’s no surprise that these Eagle Scouts chose to be such kind friends of birds!

At Farm Sanctuary, our aviaries provide shelter for chickens and turkeys, many of whom have been rescued from cruelty, neglect, and other heartbreaking situations. Here, they have a forever-safe place to land, and their new “bird benches” are contributing to the daily enrichment we offer to enhance their lives, facilitate natural behaviors like perching, and promote their overall well-being.

Our deepest thanks go to Eagle Scout JPL Troop 509 for their inspiring ideas and all the work they did in support of a great cause. The benches and perches they made will continue to have an impact at Farm Sanctuary for generations to come!

Come see their efforts in action: Visit our California sanctuary and enjoy an award-winning tour!
