EAT-Lancet, which brings together the expertise of scientists from around the world, also states that a transition to this “planetary health diet” could reduce agricultural emissions by 15% and help the world feed 9.6 billion people by the year 2050.

New EAT-Lancet Report: A Plant-Based Shift Could Save 15 Million Lives
In a highly anticipated update to its 2019 report, the EAT-Lancet Commission states that a global shift toward largely plant-based diets could prevent around 15 million deaths annually.
“If we do not transition away from the unsustainable food path we’re on today, we will fail on the climate agenda,” said the report’s co-author, Johan Rockström. “We will fail on the biodiversity agenda. We will fail on food security. We’ll fail on so many pathways.”
The authors explain why swift action is vital, noting that “food systems remain squarely centred at the nexus of food security, human health, environmental sustainability, social justice, and the resilience of nations.”
The strong new statements build upon EAT-Lancet’s 2019 report, which called for “increasing consumption of plant-based foods and substantially reducing consumption of animal source foods.”
The report cements Farm Sanctuary’s position that choosing a “planetary health diet” rich in whole, plant-based foods is the single most effective way to lighten your daily footprint and fight factory farming’s devastating climate harms.
