In what may be a presidential first, “pardoned” turkeys will be more than a photo-op—they will be truly free

Watkins Glen, NY (November 5, 2021)— Ricky Gervais, Billie Eilish, and Joaquin Phoenix join a growing list of compassionate celebrities and Americans urging President Biden to truly honor the turkeys he is expected to “pardon” this year by releasing them to Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s founding farm animal sanctuary, where they will enjoy the best life possible for pardoned turkeys. Other celebs who have signed the petition include Rooney Mara, Dave Bautista, Mena Suvari, Margaret Cho, Natasha Lyonne, Alan Cumming, Sadie Sink, and Mayim Bialik.

Every year for the holidays, 68 million turkeys are treated as commodities and endure systematic abuse in the factory farming food system. Beginning in 1947—and most years since—lobbyists for the turkey industry have held a photo op (formalized as the “pardon” by President George H. W. Bush) gifting the president with a live turkey in advance of the holidays. “Pardoned” turkeys are often sent to farms, petting zoos, and universities with poultry science programs where they are likely not cared for as individuals with unique personalities, emotions, needs, and preferences. The petition is a plea to allow the spared turkeys the kindness, personalized care, independence, and the comfort of a flock that Farm Sanctuary believes they deeply deserve.
