Thanks to spin-offs like Galentine’s and Palentine’s Days, the love celebrated each February has expanded well beyond romance alone. Bonds between friends can be every bit as deep, meaningful, and life-changing.

In fact, for many of the rescued residents of Farm Sanctuary, a friendship offers more than connection—it provides much-needed safety and comfort after difficult beginnings. With a trusted companion by their side, our resident animals enjoy brighter days, and the past becomes a distant memory.

Wilfred came to Farm Sanctuary after his guardian passed away. Having lost one of the few humans he trusted, this grieving goose would need a little extra TLC. We knew Wilfred would feel more at home as soon as he met Kennedy.

Like Wilfred, Kennedy is shy and prefers a calm, quiet environment. In each other, the geese found comfort, companionship, and a sense of belonging. 

The pair now share their own side of the barn, along with a few ducks they’ve accepted into their space. Wilfred has taken on the role of protector, loudly honking to warn anyone who gets “too close” to his beloved Kennedy. The pair can often be found snuggling or snoozing together in their cozy nook, soothed by each other’s presence.

Biscuit’s journey to sanctuary began when a caring teenager rescued him from an animal sale facility. The two formed a close bond, but when the teen had to move away for college, Biscuit came to live at our California sanctuary. 

Our veterinarian discovered that Biscuit needed his left eye removed and that he had a neurological condition causing head tilting, stumbling, and sometimes walking in circles. Despite Biscuit’s physical challenges, he was enjoying sanctuary life—until tragedy struck again when two of his best friends, Otto and Kelley, both passed away from neurological conditions.

Meanwhile, across the country, six-week-old Pippa arrived at our New York sanctuary after being rescued from a lamb meat farm. Untreated medical issues left her with a leg injury and what appeared to be partial blindness. Thankfully, her eye issue turned out to be a treatable infection—but her leg required amputation. We transferred Pippa to our California sanctuary, a better environment for her with its flatter terrain and other sheep with similar healthcare needs, including Biscuit.

After a brief struggle to establish a hierarchy, Biscuit and Pippa became best friends. Biscuit stands guard while Pippa explores the yard in her cart. In turn, Pippa guides Biscuit as they graze, accompanies him to his weekly music therapy appointments, and snuggles up beside him at bedtime.

Freddy’s guardians worried for his safety when he repeatedly escaped his enclosure, so he came to live at Farm Sanctuary, where he’d be safer. Here, he joined a flock of sheep that also includes a few shy, gentle goats like Freddy.

Cali arrived six years later, after losing her best goat friend. Her guardians knew she needed a companion, so they contacted Farm Sanctuary. The heartbroken Cali remained depressed through her short quarantine period away from the other goats. But that would change quickly.

When we introduced Cali to our flock, she perked up the moment she spotted Freddy, a fellow goat, among the sheep. Though Freddy was hesitant at first, for Cali, it was love at first sight. She patiently and persistently won his friendship, and the two became inseparable. They ate together, lounged beside each other, and slept side by side. Cali found the companionship she had been desperately missing, and, with her support, Freddy grew more confident and comfortable every day.

Recently, we had to say goodbye to sweet Freddy. His loss has been deeply felt by everyone, especially Cali—and we’re grateful she has the rest of her flock of sheep and goats to provide solace.

Friendship enriches all our lives, and that’s especially true for the animals at Farm Sanctuary. With a trusted companion by their side, past hardships fade, replaced by comfort, safety, and joy.
