It was a Saturday in New York City and two separate but urgent situations were each unfolding: In one part of the city, rescuers were caring for chickens freed from a common religious ritual sacrifice. Farm Sanctuary, in collaboration with local activists, had already planned to take in a few birds rescued from this first case. That same day, though, other people discovered birds who’d fallen from a truck bound for a Brooklyn slaughterhouse. By the end of the day, we’d be arranging to help 41 chickens in need.

Shani and his guardian both needed a safe place to land. However, when the pair reached a houseless shelter, staff had to turn the tiny chick away. They couldn’t accommodate his needs — but when we learned about Shani, we knew we could help!

Jake and Peanut had a rough journey to Farm Sanctuary. Instead of traveling in a crate or trailer, the boys arrived in the open bed of a pickup truck, tied down flat with bungee cords. The family who brought them in said they'd found the two just wandering around. The family's small children were weeping, though, suggesting a very different story that we'd never learn. But seeing them handled like boxes rather than living beings, we knew we couldn't ignore their need.

In early March, we received a call about a couple of chickens roaming around a rest stop. Knowing how dangerous it is for chickens to be loose and unprotected, we immediately set out to see if we could locate them. After a long and thorough search of the area where they were spotted, we still hadn’t located the birds. We were close to giving up, fearing the worst, when we noticed a small, white ball of fluff in a dense patch of trees and brush.

Visitors are often surprised at the peaceful and pensive nature of cows when they meet some of the gentle giants who call Farm Sanctuary home.

Oregon’s proposed ban on octopus farming, HB 2557, has been scheduled for an April 9 work session (discussion, review, and editing before voting begins). This means we have just days left to urge lawmakers to pass a statewide prohibition on the production and sale of farmed octopus!
