With the enormous number of farm animals in need — and more than nine billion of these animals slaughtered each year in the United States alone — it is sadly impossible to save them all.

After nearly losing her life, a young goat named Alice is getting the fresh start she needs at Farm Sanctuary’s Southern California Shelter and winning the hearts of all she meets.

Victory! The custody battle is over; Lorelai, Rory, Paris, and Lane sheep and Luke donkey are a permanent part of the Farm Sanctuary family!

Earlier this year, Dan, a former beef farmer, asked Farm Sanctuary to help rehome his herd. Impressed by the cows' intelligence, Dan began to reconsider his relationship with them. Ultimately, he decided he could not, in good faith, send thinking, feeling beings to their deaths.

Greg’s guardians loved him so much that they chose to say goodbye to give him a better life.

In June, Farm Sanctuary staff collaborated on a special project: bringing Pippa, a three-legged lamb, from our Watkins Glen, New York shelter to her new home in Acton, California.

Missy pig, born on Halloween, had a grim and haunting start to life. She spent her days alone in a solitary pen—a nightmare for pigs, who are social beings and grow distressed without friends, enough space, and stimulation. People didn’t pay much attention to her, either. Now we know that Missy is a friendly and affectionate pig who enjoys attention (and deep belly rubs); however, the farmers who owned her didn’t see her as a friend but as a means of production.

Dogs are “man’s best friend.” Cats rule our homes—and the Internet. So where do turkeys fit into our lives? Some might argue, “on a plate.” In 2019, the United States slaughtered and processed nearly 230 million turkeys as food. Roughly 20 percent—46 million—were killed just for Thanksgiving, a.k.a. “Turkey Day.” It’s a fate we would never subject to our companion animals. But Thor, Lady Sif, Freyja, Brunnhilde, and Sheila turkeys were companions. Their former owner, a small hobby farmer, refused to let any harm befall them—even though most other farmers would raise them for meat.
