On Wednesday, March 29, Farm Sanctuary teamed up with Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) to foster critical Farm Bill conversations and celebrate the introduction of the 2023 Food & Farm Act. Since this kickoff event, Farm Sanctuary has connected with dozens of academics, advocates, environmentalists, farmers, healthcare professionals, lawyers, and organizers to explore how reforming the Farm Bill can create just, sustainable, and compassionate plant-based agricultural infrastructure to nourish us all.

At Farm Sanctuary, we aim to provide environments and care for the hundreds of farm animals residents who call our sanctuaries home, so that they can truly thrive. While providing this care is not easy, it is well worth it. We want to share our experience during Responsible Animal Guardianship month so that you, too, can be informed and ready if and when you choose to become a responsible animal guardian.
At Farm Sanctuary, we aim to provide environments and care for the hundreds of farm animals residents who call our sanctuaries home, so that they can truly thrive. In a historic day for animals and California voters, the Supreme Court of the United States has upheld Proposition 12. The law, enacted in 2018 by voter initiative with nearly two-thirds support, protects pregnant mother pigs from extreme confinement. It also bans the use of veal crates (for calves), battery cages (for egg-laying hens), and prohibits the sale of products from such inhumane systems in the state of California.

Throughout March and April 2023, Farm Sanctuary co-hosted Shift the Farm Bill satellite parties at 10 universities nationwide. From Portland, Oregon, to St. Petersburg, Florida, students across the country connected with fellow advocates, lobbied for transformative state and federal food policy bills, and enjoyed some delicious, local, plant-based food.

A sweet sheep named Dottie gave birth to twin boys on January 21, 2021, in Dutchess County, NY. What should have been a joyous event for Dottie was likely one of great stress. Dottie’s baby boys – Freckles and Patches – entered the world to severe neglect. Yet the persistence and determination of compassionate neighbors and our Farm Animal Adoption Network have given them a second chance.
