The Agriculture Improvement Act, or “Farm Bill,” is the most important legislation shaping United States food systems. Passed only twice per decade, the bill determines how we grow, distribute, and dispose of food in the United States, and is therefore responsible for the immense harm today's food systems cause to farmed animals, people, and the planet.

The distribution of land ownership creates one of the most powerful barriers to food system justice and sustainability. Land consolidation, like corporate consolidation, makes factory farming possible. But who owns land, and how much, isn’t an accident. It’s the result of historical, legal, social, and economic structures that reflect and perpetuate structural inequalities, particularly systemic racism.
