Often sold as novelties, baby animals like these two commonly face abandonment once impulse purchasers realize how much care and space an adult duck or chicken requires—and that a city apartment, for instance, is no place for a farm animal. Thanks to the intervention of a kindhearted passerby, however, this pair found their way to safety at our New York Shelter. Too small and vulnerable to join our chicken and duck flocks at first, Darnell and Ditto had only each other for company. Thankfully, neither had any qualms about their interspecies friendship. Having survived an ordeal together, the two were inseparable until Darnell’s passing a few years later. The pair’s tenderness and care toward each other helped them both adjust beautifully to their new lives, and while Darnell is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in his beloved friend. Ditto’s devotion to his friend is a reminder that, whether you have a bill or beak, feet made for swimming or perching or running, it’s the kindness you give that really counts.
