Race Car Driver Leilani Münter Hosts Celebration FOR the Turkeys
Distinctive event reflects growing trend toward placing turkeys at the center of our attention, rather than at the center of our plates
A FARM SANCTUARY FIRST: WORLD FAMOUS “FEEDING OF THE TURKEYS CEREMONY” TO BE STREAMED LIVE FROM FARMSANCTURY.ORG ON NOV. 20 AT 2:30 P.M. EASTERN
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – November 11, 2011 – She’s been called “A Woman We Love” by Esquire, “America’s Sexiest Race Car Driver” by Men’s Journal, and “One of the top ten female race car drivers in the world” by Sports Illustrated, and on November 20, NASCAR’s “Carbon-Free Girl,” Leilani Münter, will take time out of her high-speed schedule to lend some serious support to turkeys when she hosts Farm Sanctuary’s Celebration For the Turkeys at the organization’s New York Shelter in Watkins Glen.
“Turkeys are highly intelligent, social animals who deserve to be celebrated at Thanksgiving, not exploited and abused,” says Münter, a longtime vegetarian who has been adopting an acre of rainforest for every race she runs since 2007. “I’d tell anyone unfamiliar with how turkeys are treated on modern farms to check out this video and then come join me for a delicious vegan feast at Farm Sanctuary’s Celebration For the Turkeys. A plant-based diet is good for our planet, the animals, and humans — it’s a win-win-win for everyone.”
The distinctive annual event will commemorate Farm Sanctuary’s 25th anniversary and will begin at the organization’s picturesque shelter in Watkins Glen with the famous Feeding of the Turkeys Ceremony, where the shelter’s rescued turkeys are the honored guests, feasting on a buffet of their favorite holiday treats: stuffed squash, pumpkin pie, and cranberries (on silver platters, of course). For the first time ever, this crowd-pleasing ceremony will be streamed live on the organization’s website, farmsanctuary.org.
The event then moves to the beautiful Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel for a delicious vegan Thanksgiving feast for the human guests, silent auction, and special guest presentations by Münter, Tofurky Founder Seth Tibbott, Farm Sanctuary National Shelter Director Susie Coston, and Farm Sanctuary President and Co-Founder Gene Baur.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to adopt a turkey through the organization’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project, for which Ellen DeGeneres is serving as this year’s spokesperson. For a one-time donation of just $30, adopters will receive a special Adopt-A-Turkey certificate complete with color photo of a rescued turkey who resides at one of Farm Sanctuary’s shelters and fun details about their adopted turkey.
Registration is $60 and includes all aspects of the event. Due to overwhelming demand, early registration is advised and only registered guests will be accommodated during the shelter portion of the event.
